Overview
This senior commercial legal role supports one of Australia’s largest retirement solutions businesses across complex outsourcing, technology and trustee arrangements. The role operates at the intersection of commercial strategy, regulatory change and operational delivery, partnering with leaders across Operations, Technology, Transformation, Growth, Financial Advice and Client teams to solve complex problems and develop scalable legal frameworks. The role also leads and develops a Legal Counsel within the broader Legal function.
Key Accountabilities and main responsibilities
Strategic Focus
- Advise on risk allocation, service levels, performance frameworks and accountability arrangements across major outsourcing and technology contracts with superannuation trustees and service providers.
- Draft, negotiate and manage bespoke, high-value and operationally complex commercial arrangements.
- Identify opportunities to embed automation into contract workflows and legal processes in line with regulatory requirements and organisational risk appetite.
- Lift the profile and effectiveness of the Legal team through training, knowledge-sharing and practical self-service tools.
Operational Management
- Support scalable legal processes, playbooks and tools that improve efficiency and consistency without sacrificing quality.
- Translate regulatory change into practical guidance for teams delivering technology builds, outsourcing arrangements and trustee relationships.
- Contribute to AI-enabled legal technology, contract automation and process optimisation initiatives.
People Leadership
- Lead, coach and develop a Legal Counsel, fostering a collaborative and commercially minded team culture.
- Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across Operations, Technology, Transformation, Risk, Client and Product teams.
- Share knowledge and build capability across the business and Legal function.
Governance & Risk
- Monitor and assess regulatory developments affecting superannuation trustees and service providers, including CPS 230, Payday Super reforms, APRA and ASIC requirements, and AFSL obligations.
- Support the design and enhancement of compliance frameworks, policies and risk controls, including opportunities to use automation and AI in monitoring and reporting.
- Contribute to incident response, breach assessments,
regulatory engagement and operational resilience initiatives.

Experience & Personal Attributes
Experience
- Qualified Australian lawyer with a current practising certificate.
- At least 7 years’ post-qualification experience, including in-house experience in superannuation, financial services, technology or regulated outsourcing environments.
- Strong commercial contracting expertise across complex outsourcing, technology and service arrangements.
- Understanding of the superannuation ecosystem, including trustees, administrators, platforms, data flows and service delivery models.
- Experience interpreting and applying APRA and ASIC regulatory frameworks, including CPS 230, outsourcing, operational resilience, breach reporting, privacy and AFSL requirements.
- Experience supporting large-scale business transformation, migration or technology-enabled service delivery programs.
- Familiarity with AI-enabled legal technologies, contract automation and process optimisation, or a genuine interest in developing these skills.
