Equiem is changing how it builds product.
This isn't a role for someone who uses AI tools now and then. It's for a designer who has already built AI into how they work, and who can help four product squads do the same.
Why this role is different
- It's three days a week by design. It's a full-scope senior role built around three days (or hours spread across the week, if that suits you better), for someone who can run a documentation-first cadence so the squads keep moving on the days you're not working.
- You’ll ship, not just hand over. Equiem want a designer who works close to code: prototyping in code, using tools like Claude Code, Cursor or Figma MCP, and giving engineers a working starting point instead of another static file.
- You’ll shape how the whole team works. You'll be the design voice across four squads (Engage, Operate, Platform and Data Intelligence), setting the guardrails that let PMs and engineers make positive design decisions without waiting on you.
What the role actually focuses on
You'll be the embedded designer in Equiem's newest product area, turning complex building and portfolio data into insights that asset managers and building operators can trust and act on. Think Bookings Intelligence, Tenant Health Score and portfolio reporting. You'll run discovery, research with customers, prototype and test quickly, and iterate.
You'll own and evolve the shared design system, set the quality bar, run critiques, and write the self-serve guidance and AI workflows that stop every squad inventing its own version of good design.
What we're looking for
- 5+ years of senior product design, with end-to-end craft from discovery through to shipped outcomes
- Real experience designing data products such as dashboards, reporting and decision-support tools, where trust and clarity matter more than looking good
- AI built into how you work, and the ability to explain how you've systemised it: research synthesis, prototyping, QA,
documentation and handoff
- Hands-on experience working close to code, whether prototyping in code, contributing front-end changes, or an engineering background before design
- Design systems experience, including driving adoption across more than one team
- A track record of changing a slow way of working yourself, not just pointing it out
- The backbone to challenge long discovery phases and legacy habits, and the empathy to bring people with you
Typical backgrounds that work well
- Senior or Lead Product Designers who already ship with AI and code
- Engineers who moved into product design
- Design systems leads who've made teams self-serve
Nice to have
- PropTech, construction or built-environment experience
- Experience supporting several squads at once
- Linking UX work to commercial outcomes like renewals, adoption and QBR wins
What this role is not
You probably won't enjoy this if:
- You'd rather stay embedded in one squad than help others improve
- AI is a side tool for you rather than part of how you work
- Your strength is service design or facilitation rather than hands-on product craft
- You're after a full-time role, or a part-time role you hope will turn into one
What success looks like in the first 12 months
- Data Intelligence interfaces in production that customers use, trust and act on without training
- A design system live and adopted across all four squads
- PMs and engineers making good design calls without needing you for everything
- A three-day model that works, with no gaps and no drop in quality
The details
- $107,000 + super for a 3-day week
- Melbourne (Collins St) – in the office at least one day a week (Tues or Thurs), ideally two
- Full Australian working rights required
- 30-minute screening call with me
- 1 hour with Julia (CPTO) on design philosophy, data UX, AI fluency and how you'd run a part-time week
- A hands-on working session with the product team
- Final conversations with the Head of Engineering and People & Culture
