About the role
The Laundry and Community Support Worker are responsible for operating and supporting the delivery of a mobile laundry service within Katherine and surrounding communities including Binjari, Rockhole, and Kalano on a routine basis. The role aims to improve hygiene, health, and wellbeing by providing access to laundry facilities and promoting healthy hygiene practices. Working closely with community members, health staff and Elders, the Laundry Worker assists individuals and families to wash and dry clothing and bedding, maintains high standards of infection control, and shares practical health and hygiene information in a culturally safe and respectful manner. The Laundry Worker plays an important role in building community connections, supporting positive health outcomes, and contributing to the prevention of hygiene-related illnesses through education and engagement.
Key responsibilities
- Support community members to wash and dry their clothing and bedding, providing practical assistance and guidance as required
- Create and maintain a welcoming, culturally safe, and respectful environment that encourages community engagement, yarning, and positive social connections
- Promote good hygiene practices by sharing straightforward health and hygiene messages and supporting informal health discussions with community members
- Work collaboratively with local health staff, Elders, health coaches, and community stakeholders to identify and support individuals and families with increased hygiene and wellbeing needs
- Operate, maintain, and monitor the mobile laundry unit to ensure equipment remains clean, safe, functional, and well-maintained
- Maintain accurate records of service usage, equipment maintenance,
and daily activities
- Assess the health, hygiene and wellbeing needs of community members through regular engagement, active listening and culturally respectful conversations
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with community members, families, Elders, health staff, and other stakeholders
- Attend daily briefings and participate in the allocation and planning of daily mobile laundry service activities and community visits
- Complete all associated record keeping procedures relating to client services and ensure vehicle logs are completed daily
Position Requirements
- Current NT Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card), or ability to obtain
- Current Criminal History Check, or ability to obtain
- Current NT Driver's Licence
- Basic computer skills including the ability to use MS Office Suite (including Outlook) and Communicare or equivalent systems
- Sound verbal communication (bilingual preferred) and listening skills
- Able to work to and meet deadlines
- Demonstrates a basic knowledge of Wurli health services and other support services available to Wurli clients
