About the role
MetLife is seeking an experienced retail life insurance pricing professional with strong technical, commercial and people leadership capability. This role will help shape the growth, financial performance, and sustainability of a significant and growing individual life insurance portfolio, contributing to both inforce and new business pricing activity. The successful candidate will combine a deep understanding of retail products and customer behaviour with the ability to translate actuarial analysis into clear pricing decisions, balancing profitability, competitiveness and fair customer outcomes.
Key responsibilities
- Lead pricing reviews for the Australian individual retail life portfolio, spanning inforce repricing, new business pricing, and product changes.
- Support the end-to-end inforce repricing process, including portfolio segmentation, experience assessment, rate design, behavioral and lapse analysis, customer impact assessment, implementation support and post-change monitoring.
- Maintain a robust new business pricing presence by monitoring market position, adviser and customer outcomes, business mix and sales performance, and recommending strategies that support sustainable growth.
- Lead the development and review of pricing assumptions across claims, lapses, expenses, and economic factors, drawing on internal experience, industry studies and expert judgement.
- Develop pricing strategies that balance growth, portfolio sustainability, customer value, competitive positioning, regulatory expectations and risk appetite.
- Prepare high-quality pricing papers, recommendations and presentations for senior management, governance committees and actuarial review, with transparent documentation of methods, assumptions, judgements and risks.
- Develop, maintain and strengthen pricing models, experience-monitoring tools and management information, with appropriate controls, testing, documentation and automation.
- Partner closely with Product, Distribution, Finance, Actuarial, Risk, Underwriting, Claims, Operations,
Technology and Legal teams to translate pricing decisions into effective customer and business outcomes.
- Support managing relationships with reinsurance partners, including pricing input, treaty implications, experience insights and support for product or underwriting changes.
- Lead, coach and develop a team of pricing professionals, managing priorities and capacity while promoting sound judgement, strong technical standards and timely delivery.
About you
- Fellowship with the Institute of Actuaries Australia (FIAA), or an equivalent recognised actuarial qualification.
- Degree in Actuarial Science, mathematics, statistics, finance or a related discipline.
- Typically at least five years' relevant actuarial experience, including substantial retail life insurance pricing experience.
- Deep knowledge of Australian retail life insurance products, pricing practices and the adviser-driven market, including death, total and permanent disability, trauma and income protection benefits.
- Demonstrated experience in both inforce repricing and new business pricing, including rate design, portfolio segmentation, customer impact and implementation considerations.
- Robust technical understanding of life insurance financials, with the ability to interpret financial metrics and consider trade-offs across pricing bases.
- Solid actuarial modelling, data analysis and assumption-setting capability, supported by sound model governance and attention to detail.
- Commercial judgement and the ability to convert complex analysis into clear, practical recommendations under uncertainty.
- Strong stakeholder management, negotiation and influencing skills, including confidence presenting to senior leaders and governance forums.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of clear pricing papers and executive-level presentations.
