Make the calls that shape how Launceston grows
Every new subdivision, road connection and stormwater system in Launceston has to keep working for the community long after the developer has moved on. As our Senior Development Engineer, you'll be the one who makes sure it does.
You'll lead the engineering assessment of our most complex development, subdivision, building and plumbing applications, working through stormwater, flooding, traffic, access and service connection issues with consultants and developers. You'll set the conditions, check the construction and recommend the assets the city takes on. It's senior work where your judgement carries real weight, and where you can see the results of it every time you head across town.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Giving senior engineering advice at pre-lodgement, so applicants and consultants understand infrastructure, stormwater, traffic and asset requirements early
- Assessing complex development, subdivision, building and plumbing applications and setting explicit, defensible engineering conditions within statutory timeframes
- Reviewing engineering designs for infrastructure to be vested in Council, and overseeing construction compliance through audit and final inspections
- Finalising subdivisions and strata developments, including bonds, financial securities, easements,
title matters and asset handover
- Coordinating specialist input from across Council and escalating high-risk or policy-sensitive matters to senior leaders
- Contributing to technical guidance and continuous improvement in engineering standards and assessment practice
About You
We are looking for someone who demonstrates, through behaviour, an alignment and an understanding of Our Values and has the following qualifications, skills and experience:
- A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, municipal engineering or another directly relevant engineering discipline, with post-qualification experience in civil infrastructure, development engineering, municipal engineering or a closely related field
- Demonstrated senior-level experience assessing complex development, subdivision, building or plumbing matters with municipal infrastructure impacts
- Proven ability to interpret and apply legislation, planning approvals, permit conditions, engineering standards and Council policies to give clear, defensible and timely advice
- Experience resolving complex stormwater, flooding, traffic, access, service connection, easement, bond or asset handover issues
- The confidence to negotiate and explain complex technical matters to consultants, developers, contractors and senior leaders
- A strong community focus, with the people and customers affected by your decisions front of mind
- Local government engineering experience would be well regarded, but is not essential
