Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) is a justice service that resolves a wide range of disputes for the Victorian community, including residential tenancies, planning and environment disputes, consumer and building matters, guardianship and administration, professional regulation and human rights.

About the Role
The Specialist Registrar plays a pivotal role in supporting the effective management and resolution of complex matters within VCAT's People's Rights and Responsibilities Division (PRRD).
Working closely with Members, Practice Leads and Registry staff, you will provide expert legal, procedural and case management advice, ensuring matters are appropriately triaged, managed and progressed through the Tribunal.
The role combines specialist legal expertise with delegated registrar powers to support efficient case management and improve access to justice.
The role requires strong analytical skills, sound judgement and the ability to navigate complex legal and procedural issues.
You will assess applications,



identify key risks and issues, prepare briefs for Members, and provide advice on case progression pathways to support informed decision-making and hearing readiness.
You will also contribute to VCAT's ongoing transformation by leveraging digital case management systems, operational data and technology-enabled processes to improve workflows, enhance service delivery and support continuous improvement.
Duties will include:
* providing expert legal and procedural advice on complex matters and case management issues
* triaging and managing applications, identifying appropriate pathways and ensuring matters progress efficiently
* preparing high-quality briefs and recommendations to support informed decision-making by Tribunal Members
* engaging with stakeholders to provide procedural guidance and support hearing readiness
* leveraging digital case management systems and data to monitor case progression, identify trends and improve service delivery
* building capability across teams through specialist advice, coaching and knowledge sharing
The position is fixed term until 30 June ****
About You
The ideal candidate is a highly capable legal professional with experience navigating complex legislation, procedures and case management frameworks.
You will have demonstrated sound judgement, analytical thinking and strong communication skills.
You thrive in a collaborative setting and have a passion for delivering high-quality, user-focused services that improve access to justice.
You will bring:
experience providing legal, procedural or case management advice in a tribunal,



court, legal or government setting
proven ability to interpret legislation and resolve complex issues
excellent communication skills with the ability to provide clear and practical advice to diverse stakeholders
highly developed interpersonal skills building effective relationships and working collaboratively across teams
exceptional organisational skills, managing competing priorities while delivering quality outcomes
strong digital capability, including experience using case management systems, data insights and technology to improve service delivery
