Expression of Interest - Independent Chair, Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC)

MidCoast Council invites interested persons to submit an Expression of Interest for the position of Chair on the MidCoast Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee.

About the Committee
Council's Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee (ARIC) provides independent assurance and advice to Council across governance, risk management, internal controls, financial management, compliance, organisational performance and internal audit.
The Committee comprises an Independent Chair, two Independent Members and one non-voting Councillor member and meets at least four times each year.

The Opportunity
As Independent Chair, you will provide leadership to ARIC and support robust, objective and constructive oversight and advice to Council.
You will lead Committee meetings, promote constructive and appropriately challenging discussion, oversee the internal audit function and support effective relationships between ARIC, Council, the General Manager, senior management, internal audit and external audit.
We are seeking an experienced professional who brings sound judgement, credibility, independence and the ability to lead effective discussions in a local governance environment.
The Chairperson will support the Committee to fulfil its advisory role in accordance with the ARIC Terms of Reference. For a copy of the Terms of Reference see the supporting documentation in this link.
About You
You will bring relevant experience in audit, risk, governance, financial management and/or organisational performance, together with experience chairing or leading an ARIC, board, committee or comparable forum.
You will demonstrate strong leadership and strategic thinking, qualified standing and credibility, sound judgement and the ability to constructively challenge while maintaining effective relationships. An understanding of local government or the broader public sector environment, together with relevant professional networks and contemporary governance and assurance experience, will be highly regarded.
Appointment and Remuneration
ARIC meetings are generally held in person at Council's Administration Centre, Yalawanyi Ganya, Taree, with provision for telephone or videoconference attendance where appropriate. The Committee meets at least four times each year and additional meetings may be held as required.
The successful applicant must be available to participate in the February 2027 ARIC meeting and complete an induction before that meeting.
Remuneration is $1,500 per meeting plus GST and superannuation, including time spent preparing for meetings. Reasonable travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with Council's applicable arrangements.
The Chair will be appointed by Council for a term of up to four years and may be eligible for reappointment for one further term, subject to performance, Council approval and continued compliance with the applicable independence and eligibility criteria.
Eligibility and Independence
Applicants must meet the independence and eligibility requirements prescribed by the Local Government (General) Regulation 2021 and outlined in the ARIC Information Pack.
The appointment is subject to relevant pre-appointment checks, including criminal record, bankruptcy, reference, eligibility and conflict-of-interest checks.
