About the service

Aboriginal Legal Service of WA Limited (ALSWA) has been funded by the Department of Justice to employ bail support workers to assist in the delivery of the Adaptive Bail and Early Resolution Court List pilot in the Perth Magistrates Court for targeted cohorts of Aboriginal accused on remand in four metropolitan prisons to accelerate their transition to bail and/or the early resolution of their matters.

About the role

The main role of the Support Worker will be to provide support to accused persons to assist with the development of bail support plans and to meet bail conditions. The Support Worker will be required to attend prisons in person or via video link and to conduct community outreach work to speak with family/friends regarding suitable residential addresses and other bail conditions. The Support Worker will refer appropriate clients to the ALSWA Bail Support Service for ongoing support post-release on bail where eligible.

The role also offers scope for the Support Worker to obtain certificates under section 48 of the Aboriginal Affairs Planning Authority Act 1972 to enable them to appear on behalf of accused in the Adaptive Bail and Early Resolution (ABER) Court and other courts.

About you

To be considered for this role, you will need to meet the following criteria:





- A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the issues affecting them along with an appropriate level of cultural understanding, empathy and sensitivity.

- Demonstrated ability and commitment to working independently or as part of a team comprising legal and non-legal staff with a willingness to learn and share knowledge with others.

- Highly developed communication skills, both written and verbal.

- Demonstrated experience in the use of Microsoft office and applications.

- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure.

- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.

- Knowledge of organizations within the community that can assist with meeting the objectives of the Adaptive Bail and Early Resolution Court Pilot.

Other desirable skills and experience include:

- Knowledge of and commitment to Occupational Safety and Health, Equal Opportunity and Disability Legislation
