This role offers flexible, people-first working conditions

About the role

NSW Public Works (NSW PW) is part of the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and supports many different local and state government agencies to deliver critical infrastructure initiatives by providing expert advisory, planning, design, delivery and support services.

We are looking for a finance professional who enjoys solving problems and finding better ways of working to join the Commercial and Program Governance team.

Working closely with project managers and business leaders, you will support budgeting, forecasting, reporting and commercial analysis, including project performance and profitability analysis, to help improve decision-making and project outcomes.

You will also contribute to the ongoing improvement of commercial reporting, data analytics and business processes, helping to identify opportunities to streamline reporting, improve data quality and provide meaningful insights for decision-makers.

The role supports the Finance Manager in the preparation and reconciliation of monthly reports, contributes to the ongoing development and improvement of financial reporting systems and processes, and provides practical commercial advice and support for the tendering and delivery of client projects and programs.

About you

- Experience in a finance, accounting and/or commercial environment.
- A degree in Accounting or a related discipline, and/or demonstrated equivalent experience in finance, accounting or business and financial analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and translate data into practical business insights.

- Robust working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including advanced financial reporting functions.
- Awareness of SAP and how enterprise financial systems support reporting, project accounting and commercial processes. Hands-on SAP experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
- Ability to provide accurate and timely financial advice, reporting and analysis, while working within relevant legislation, financial policies, delegations, governance frameworks and Treasury reporting requirements.
- Ability to build effective working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
- A proactive and adaptable approach, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver accurate, timely work in a fast-paced environment.

Highly favourable: Data, analytics and digital capability

While this role is first and foremost a finance and commercial position, experience using data, analytics and digital tools to improve reporting, decision-making and business performance will be highly regarded.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can:

- Use Power BI to develop reports and dashboards that provide clear project and commercial insights.
- Use Power Query or similar tools to improve data extraction, transformation and reconciliation.
- Work with SQL-based data sources or structured datasets.
- Use simple automation or scripting, where appropriate, to reduce manual reporting effort and improve consistency.
- Translate complex financial and project information into clear, decision-ready insights for non-finance stakeholders.

These capabilities will support and improve finance and project controls processes, rather than replace formal systems or enterprise platforms.

This is an opportunity to be part of a team focused on building smarter, more insight-driven ways of supporting project delivery across NSW Public Works. If you enjoy improving how finance supports the business and want to contribute to a commercially mature operation, we would love to hear from you.
