Role Overview
Enhance core stability: Teach targeted exercises that strengthen the deep abdominal and back muscles to support the spine.
Improve functional balance: Focus on movements that strengthen the hips, ankles, and feet to aid in fall prevention.
Protect joint health: Deliver non-weight-bearing or low-impact exercises that build strength without straining arthritic or sensitive joints.
Key Responsibilities
Exercise modification: Tailor classical Pilates movements using props like blocks, bands, Pilates balls, or chairs to accommodate limited mobility or spinal conditions (e.g., osteoporosis, stenosis).
Secure equipment management: Safely guide seniors using specialized apparatus like the Pilates Reformer or Tower, ensuring spring tensions are light and secure.
Posture and alignment correction:
Provide explicit verbal cues and gentle visual direction to ensure proper spinal alignment and breathing techniques.
Pace control: Maintain a controlled, deliberate class pace that prioritizes precision and safety over speed or high repetitions.
Qualifications & Requirements
Certification: A comprehensive Pilates certification (Mat and Apparatus) from a recognized body like the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) or equivalent.
Specialised training: Advanced workshops or certifications specifically in Pilates for seniors, joint replacement rehabilitation, or bone health.
First Aid: Current First Aid and CPR/AED credentials.
Soft skills: High empathy, an encouraging tone, extreme patience, and sharp observation skills to spot compensation patterns.
