TIFA Support Services is seeking a compassionate and reliable casual Disability Support Worker to support a woman in her early 60s living with Multiple Sclerosis in an aged care facility.
The participant is completely paralysed and communicates through blinking in response to yes-or-no questions. You will take the time to understand her responses, respect her choices and help ensure her needs are heard and addressed.
Your responsibilities
Assist with repositioning onto her side every two hours, following her individual care plan and the facility’s manual handling procedures.
Use her established blink responses to communicate, allowing sufficient time for her to answer.
Provide companionship and reassurance, including reading the Bible aloud at her request.
Advocate for her feeding, medication, bathing and comfort needs with aged care staff, and follow up on any unmet needs.
Report discomfort, changes in her condition or care concerns promptly to nursing staff.
Complete transparent and accurate shift notes.
Feeding,
medication administration and bathing are carried out by aged care staff and are not part of your duties. Your role includes advocating for this care to happen and communicating the participant’s preferences. Repositioning must be coordinated with facility staff, using the assistance and equipment required by her care plan.
Shift times
Monday to Saturday, 8:00 am to 12:30 pm.
About you
Patient, compassionate and attentive to nonverbal communication.
Confident advocating respectfully and following up on care concerns.
Experienced in supporting people with complex physical disabilities.
Trained and competent in secure repositioning and manual handling.
Comfortable reading the Bible aloud and respecting the participant’s faith.
Reliable and able to work collaboratively with aged care staff.
Experience with Multiple Sclerosis, pressure care or alternative communication methods is highly regarded.
