About us
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hospital Liaison Service provides advocacy and a cultural link between health professionals, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander inpatients, families, and carers at Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service facilities.
They can break down communication barriers so that Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers can better understand the hospitalisation, appropriate treatment, and discharge needs.

About your chance
In your new role you will....
- Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in relation to their needs while patients of Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service to facilitate culturally appropriate health care and improve health outcomes for patients and their families.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and liaise with relevant community agencies, support networks and accommodation services. Identify gaps in services and/or resources and where appropriate assist with service/resource development.
- Liaise between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients/families/carers, staff and other agencies to assist with effective communication.
- Participate in the education of medical/nursing/allied health staff from Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and beliefs as it relates to the healthcare of the patient.
