Senior Tax Accountant in Regional NSW Armidale

Smith Sharpe & Abbott is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Accountant to join our growing accounting and business advisory practice in Armidale, NSW.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced tax professional who is looking to take the next step in their career and play a key role within a well-established regional firm.

You will work closely with a diverse portfolio of clients, providing high-quality tax compliance, planning and advisory services. You will also have the opportunity to mentor junior team members, contribute to the growth of the practice and, for the right person, explore an opportunity to buy into the business and become an equity partner.

Key responsibilities

Prepare and review complex tax returns for individuals, small to medium enterprises and larger corporate clients

Provide strategic tax planning advice to clients, identifying opportunities for tax efficiency and compliance

Conduct tax research and maintain knowledge of current tax legislation, rulings and case law

Manage relationships with Australian Tax Office (ATO) on behalf of clients, including managing disputes and compliance enquiries

Assist with financial statement preparation and verification for tax compliance purposes

Mentor and supervise junior accountants and tax staff, providing guidance and quality assurance on their work

Contribute to the development of tax strategies and business advisory services for clients

Maintain accurate client files and ensure compliance with professional standards and regulations

Contribute to the ongoing improvement of processes, systems and service delivery within the firm.

Participate in business development activities to support growth of the practice





What we're looking for

We are looking for a technically strong and commercially minded accountant who enjoys working directly with clients and wants to be part of a growing regional practice.

You will ideally have:

A recognised accounting qualification (CPA, CA or equivalent), or be close to completion.

A minimum of 3 years' relevant post-qualification experience in tax accounting or tax advisory.

Strong knowledge of Australian taxation law, including income tax, GST and superannuation legislation

Experience using tax and accounting software commonly used in Australian public practice; Xero experience is preferred.

Strong technical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret legislation and apply it to practical client situations.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to clients.

Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple client matters while meeting deadlines.

A collaborative approach and the ability to mentor and develop junior team members.

High level of professionalism, integrity and commitment to ethical practice standards

A genuine interest in developing long-term client relationships and contributing to the growth of the practice.

Desirable: Experience in a regional accounting practice and/or knowledge of rural, agricultural and primary production businesses.
