Every day at the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra), we work to strengthen public trust and confidence in Australia's health practitioners and improve access to safe, high-quality healthcare.
We work in partnership with 15 National Boards to implement the national regulatory scheme for health professionals. The purpose of health practitioner regulation is to protect the public by ensuring that only health practitioners who have the skills, qualifications, and knowledge to provide safe care are registered.
About the role
Reporting to the Senior Legal Advisor - Information, Appeals and Advice, the Legal Advisor provides high quality legal advice and litigation support in matters relating to the regulation and registration of health practitioners.
Working closely with colleagues across legal, regulatory, and operational teams, you will contribute to a collaborative environment where knowledge is shared and people are supported. In joining our team, you will provide legal and strategic advice on registration matters and manage litigation relating to appeals and judicial reviews arising from registration decisions, and reinstatement applications under the National Law. You will partner with internal stakeholders across Ahpra and the National Boards to navigate complex legal issues and support sound regulatory decision-making.
This is an ongoing, full time role and can be based in any of our Ahpra offices.
About you
You are a capable and thoughtful legal skilled who can work with a high degree of autonomy while recognising the importance of teamwork and shared responsibility. You bring strong organisational skills, good judgement, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a complex and sensitive environment. Importantly, you are people centred in your approach. You may have experience working with vulnerable individuals or within environments where your empathy,
discretion and professionalism are essential. You communicate clearly, listen carefully and build trusting relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
You are an experienced legal practitioner who enjoys complex legal work and can translate legal issues into practical, strategic advice. You hold an unrestricted Australian practising certificate and bring at least 5 years post-qualification experience. You have strong litigation experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build productive relationships across a range of stakeholders. Experience in administrative, regulatory, or public law environments will be highly regarded.
As the ideal candidate, you will demonstrate the following in your application:
- Hold admission as a legal practitioner to any state or territory and holds, or is eligible to hold, unrestricted practicing certificate.
- Excellent legal, analytical, conceptual and investigative skills particularly in relation to analysing evidence and advising on complex issues.
- Ability to present legal information to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to build and maintain constructive relationships.
- Ability to manage appeals to tribunals or the courts, including liaising with other legal representatives.
