Melbourne
Local is a Melbourne-born BTR business focused on creating and managing communities built entirely for renters. We believe in using our homes to create stronger communities, making renting more secure, sustainable and connected for Australians. Now one of Australia’s largest BTR platforms, Local has a completed portfolio valued at over $2.46B, with 3,246 apartments across six neighbourhoods along the eastern seaboard. It’s also important to us to provide homes for people who, through no fault of their own, don’t have suitable places to live. That’s why at least 10% of each of our projects is committed to supplying homes for social, affordable and specialist disability accommodation. Our people are our greatest assets. We have a team made up of diverse skills and perspectives united by a shared goal: creating communities that people truly love being part of. If that sounds like something you’d like to be part of, read on!
A little about the opportunity
Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, our Compliance Officer keeps Local and its associated entities on top of their regulatory, reporting and governance obligations — with a strong focus on the periodic and annual reporting that underpins our compliance framework. You’ll oversee Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) requirements across our acquisitions and our Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) obligations, and play a key part in building out our compliance systems as Local continues to scale — working closely with our Legal and Finance teams. It’s a great opportunity for someone who enjoys turning regulatory complexity into clear, practical processes.
What you’ll bring
- Compliance experience: 3–5 years’ experience in a compliance, regulatory or legal role, with a track record of meeting government and regulatory requirements.
- Strong legal literacy: You’re comfortable working with, and meeting the requirements of, government and regulatory bodies.
- Excellent organisation: Solid time management skills and high attention to detail, with solid administrative capability.
- Background flexibility:
Experience in financial services or asset management is highly transferable — a background in real estate or property isn’t required.
- Alternative pathways welcome: A background as a paralegal, or prior experience in public sector or public service compliance roles, would also suit this role.
- Willingness to learn: Regulatory landscape knowledge can be built on the job — what matters most is a demonstrated track record in compliance and strong legal literacy.
What you’ll be doing
- Manage Local’s periodic and annual regulatory reporting obligations, including reporting related to Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) requirements across Local’s acquisitions.
- Administer and maintain Local’s Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) compliance program, with particular attention to real estate transactions involving the receipt and distribution of funds.
- Support Local in establishing and maintaining its own Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL), including ongoing compliance and reporting once granted.
- Support legal compliance activities across the business, including privacy compliance.
- Gather, organise and maintain accurate information on Local’s business and corporate structure to support compliance reporting, record-keeping and regulatory obligations.
- Monitor changes to relevant regulatory requirements (e.g. FIRB, AML/CTF, privacy) and advise the business on their implications, supporting the scaling of compliance systems and reporting processes as Local continues to grow.
- Work closely with the Legal and Finance teams to embed compliance requirements into day-to-day business processes.
- Manage and contribute to relationships with key stakeholder groups, including internal teams and relevant external parties, to achieve required business outcomes.
- Act ethically and responsibly in all dealings with regulators,
advisors and service providers.
- Fully comply with Local’s Workplace Health and Safety System and actively champion a positive safety culture within your team and area of responsibility.
Why join Local Residential?
For us, this is more than just a job; it’s something we genuinely care about. What we’re building takes curiosity, energy and a willingness to challenge the norm. We’ve created a culture where people are encouraged to speak up, think differently and keep pushing for better because “that’ll do” isn’t really our thing. We’re not all work and no play, though. We love rewarding our people for the work that they do, and we’re big believers in having FUN.
Here’s a little about our perks:
- The days of the 9–5 are long gone. We offer flexible hours, with one day a week from home and core collaboration time to stay connected.
- We’re big on growth, from courses and conferences to leadership development; we’ll support you to learn, develop and thrive.
- We also know the importance of switching off, with 7 additional Fridays off throughout the year to switch off and focus on themselves, their loved ones and their wellbeing and additional time to give back through community impact days.
- From day one merch to “sips and chips,” team lunches and regular social events, we make sure there’s plenty of fun along the way.
- Our EAP is available to all team members and their immediate family, providing confidential support whenever it’s needed. Whether it’s personal, professional or somewhere in between, we’ve got you covered
- We support our people inside and outside of work too - from referral bonuses and fitness challenges to EV salary sacrificing and paid parental leave for our Little Locals
We’re committed to a workplace that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Different perspectives make us stronger, more creative, and help us keep challenging the way renting and living are done If you’ve got the skills, curiosity and drive to learn, even if you don’t tick every box, we still encourage you to get in touch.
