Bacchus Marsh

Qualified Electrician – Residential Service & Maintenance

$50 per hour base rate + uncapped weekly commission

Bacchus Marsh / Melton | Full-time | Monday to Friday

NextGen Electricians is a small but growing residential electrical business based in Bacchus Marsh.

We mainly service Bacchus Marsh and Melton, with around 90% of our work in these areas. We also service along the Western Freeway through to Ballarat and surrounding areas.

We’re looking for another qualified electrician to join the team and take control of their own van and day-to-day schedule.

Our standard hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm, with one RDO every four weeks.

The base rate is $50 per hour, plus uncapped weekly commission. Once you’re up and running, an additional $400–$1,000+ per week is very achievable for the right person.

We’re not a big corporate company. We’re a small, easygoing local business with plenty of work and plenty of room to grow.

What you’ll get

- $50 per hour base rate
- Uncapped weekly commission, with $400–$1,000+ per week very achievable for the right person
- Superannuation
- Monday to Friday, standard hours 7:00am–3:30pm
- 40-hour week
- One RDO every four weeks / 13 RDOs per year
- Take-home company van
- Fuel card
- Company credit card
- iPad
- All uniforms supplied
- Apprentice support four days per week
- One-on-one training directly with Harley
- Ongoing training covering technical work, quoting, customer service and how we run our jobs
- Mostly local work around Bacchus Marsh and Melton
- Flexible working arrangements
- Opportunity to grow with the business

The role

We specialise in residential service and maintenance, working mainly in existing homes.

The work is varied and can include:

- General electrical service and maintenance
- Fault finding
- Switchboard upgrades
- Lighting and power
- Ceiling fans
- Smoke alarms
- CCTV and security
- TV and data
- EV chargers
- Renovations and smaller electrical projects
- Quoting and completing work for homeowners

You’ll generally work alongside our apprentice Jakob four days per week, with Jakob attending trade school on Wednesdays.

You’ll essentially run your own van and your own day. We’ll book jobs into your schedule, but you’ll be able to see and manage your calendar through ServiceM8 and have plenty of freedom to organise your day.

We don’t overbook. We want you to have enough time to look after the customer, complete your work properly and manage your own jobs.

We’re also not going to micromanage you. We’re looking for someone who can manage their own jobs, their apprentice, their breaks and their day without needing someone constantly looking over their shoulder.

You’ll have plenty of support whenever you need it, but you need to be a self-starter and be accountable for your own work.

You need to be good with people

This probably isn’t your normal electrician role.

Obviously you need to be a good electrician, but that’s only part of the job.

We’re in people’s homes every day.

You’ll be talking with customers, working out what they need, giving them options, quoting the work and, where possible, completing it while you’re there.

Customer service is a massive part of NextGen.

There are plenty of electricians around Bacchus Marsh and Melton. What makes people call us back and recommend us is pretty simple. We’re friendly, we communicate, we do neat work, we clean up after ourselves and we genuinely enjoy dealing with our customers.

We’ll give you plenty of one-on-one training in quoting, customer service and how we do things. We also regularly work on and train this side of the role as a team.

We don’t expect you to walk in knowing our systems or exactly how we operate.

But you do need to be a people person.

If you don’t enjoy talking to customers, meeting new people and building relationships, this probably isn’t the job for you.

What we’re looking for

- Holds a current Victorian electrical licence
- Has a current driver’s licence
- Has a strong residential electrical background
- Ideally has solid residential service and maintenance experience
- Is confident working independently
- Is a self-starter and can manage their own day
- Takes responsibility and is accountable for their own work
- Is a strong communicator and genuinely enjoys dealing with people
- Can lead, teach and work well with an apprentice
- Is driven and wants to perform well
- Takes pride in neat, tidy work
- Is confident with fault finding and solving problems
- Is willing to learn, take on feedback and improve
- Is reliable and takes ownership of their jobs

Strong residential background is required

A strong residential background is required for this role. Electricians who have predominantly worked in commercial or industrial environments aren’t likely to suit what we do.

Residential service and maintenance experience is ideal, although we may consider someone with a strong residential new-construction background depending on their experience and the person.

We’re looking for someone who can take ownership of their van, their jobs and their customers. You’ll have plenty of support and training from Harley, but we’re not looking to micromanage you.

You don’t need to know everything. We’d much rather have someone with the right attitude who wants to keep learning and improving.

Applicants must live within approximately 30 minutes of Bacchus Marsh to be considered for this role.

This role is deliberately designed for someone local who wants to spend less time travelling, work good hours and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Hours and flexibility

Our standard hours are 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday,

working a 40-hour week.

But being a small business means we can be flexible.

If you’d rather work 8:00am–4:30pm or 8:30am–5:00pm because that works better with your life, we’re happy to discuss it and work around what suits you.

You also get one RDO every four weeks, giving you 13 RDOs per year.

RDOs are booked in advance, and where possible we try to line them up with public holidays to give you a four-day weekend. They’re also versatile, so if another day suits you better, we can generally move them around.

Harley’s pretty simple when it comes to work-life balance. We work to live, not live to work.

Family, friends, relationships and life outside of work are more important than work. If you’ve got something important on, need a day off or need to move things around, we’ll do everything we reasonably can to make it work.

We don’t normally work weekends or public holidays and never have.

If you ever want some extra hours and would like to work a weekend, let us know and we can try to organise some work for you. Otherwise, our normal working week is Monday to Friday.

Work local

One of the biggest benefits of the role is that you aren’t spending half your life driving across Melbourne.

Around 90% of our work is in Bacchus Marsh and Melton, with the remainder generally along the Western Freeway towards Ballarat and surrounding areas.

If you live locally, most mornings you’ll be able to leave home not long before your start time and, on a normal day, be home not long after you finish.

That’s exactly what this role is designed around: good hours, local work and having a life outside of work.

Plenty of room to grow

We’ve got the work. We need the right people.

We’re already in a position where we have to turn work away because we don’t have enough people to complete it.

The plan is to continue adding vans as we find the right electricians. Once we’ve got one good person settled in and running their van, we can keep growing from there.

If you’re happy running your van, looking after your customers and doing your thing, that’s completely fine.

If you’re ambitious and eventually want more responsibility, want to help train other electricians or take on a leadership role as the business grows, there’s plenty of opportunity for that too.

About us

NextGen Electricians is a residential electrical service and maintenance business based in Bacchus Marsh.

We’re a small team and pretty easygoing. We want to enjoy coming to work, have a laugh and do a good job for our customers.

Harley and Jakob are both mad footy supporters, so being into your AFL isn’t essential… but it definitely won’t hurt

You can check out our website and socials if you want to get a better idea of the type of work we do and what we’re about before applying.

If you’re a qualified electrician looking for good money, local work, plenty of freedom and a role where you’re rewarded for performing well, we’d love to hear from you.
