The Asphalt and Civils Supervisor is responsible for leading and coordinating asphalt crews across both hand-lay and machine-lay works, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, to specification and to a high standard of workmanship.
The role is both operational and hands-on, providing strong site leadership while coordinating labour, plant, materials, subcontractors and daily project requirements.
The position will play an significant role in supporting the continued growth of Chivers Asphalt’s operational capability, including the delivery of larger asphalt and road projects for local authorities, civil contractors and Tier 1 contractors.
The successful candidate will have strong practical asphalt experience, demonstrated site leadership capability and the ability to confidently supervise both hand-lay and machine-lay asphalt operations.
The Asphalt and Civils Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and works closely with Project Managers, crew members, subcontractors, clients and traffic management providers to coordinate safe and efficient project delivery.
The position may be required to work across various project sites and hours in line with operational requirements. The role may involve early starts, outdoor work, travel between sites and work in hot weather conditions.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operational Duties
- Lead, supervise and coordinate asphalt crews across both hand-lay and machine-lay operations.
- Plan and coordinate daily site activities to ensure works are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with project requirements.
- Coordinate labour, plant, machinery, materials and subcontractors required for each project.
- Supervise asphalt paving activities including site preparation, laying, compaction, levels, joints, edges and finishing.
- Provide hands-on technical guidance and direction to crew members to achieve required quality and productivity standards.
- Read and interpret project plans, drawings, specifications, scopes of work and client requirements.
- Coordinate work sequencing and daily production requirements to maximise crew and plant utilisation.
- Monitor project progress and productivity and proactively address issues that may impact delivery.
- Coordinate with Project Managers, Construction Managers, clients, subcontractors, traffic management providers and other site personnel.
- Ensure materials, plant, equipment and tools required for upcoming works are available and fit for purpose.
- Monitor the condition and effective utilisation of asphalt plant and equipment and promptly report maintenance or operational issues.
- Assist with measuring quantities, planning daily asphalt requirements and coordinating upcoming works.
- Accurately complete and submit daily diaries, timesheets, plant records and other required project documentation.
- Support the mobilisation and delivery of larger asphalt and road projects as the business expands its machine-lay capability.
- Train, mentor and develop crew members and provide ongoing practical guidance.
- Assist with onboarding and developing new asphalt employees.
- Set clear expectations regarding productivity, workmanship, teamwork and workplace conduct.
- Resolve day-to-day site issues and maintain a professional and solutions-focused approach.
- Build positive working relationships with clients and represent Chivers Asphalt professionally on site.
- Identify opportunities to improve productivity, project delivery, work methods and operational efficiency.
- Perform other reasonable duties consistent with the position as required.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all works are undertaken in accordance with company HSEQ policies, procedures, project requirements and relevant legislative obligations.
- Promote a strong safety culture and actively demonstrate safe work practices and behaviours.
- Conduct and participate in pre-start meetings, toolbox meetings, Take 5s/JHAs and other required risk assessment processes.
- Identify site hazards and ensure appropriate controls are implemented and maintained throughout the works.
- Ensure employees and subcontractors comply with site safety requirements, PPE requirements and safe work procedures.
- Immediately address unsafe work practices and escalate significant safety concerns where required.
- Ensure traffic management and exclusion zones are appropriately established and maintained for asphalt operations.
- Monitor environmental controls including waste management, spill prevention, dust, noise and protection of surrounding areas.
- Ensure asphalt works comply with relevant project specifications, drawings, standards and client quality requirements.
- Conduct regular inspections and quality checks throughout preparation, paving, compaction and finishing activities.
- Monitor asphalt temperatures, compaction, levels, joints, finishes and other relevant quality requirements.
- Ensure required QA inspections, testing, hold points and documentation are completed accurately and within required timeframes.
- Identify non-conforming work and coordinate corrective action promptly to minimise rework and project impacts.
- Ensure incidents, hazards, near misses, injuries and environmental events are reported in accordance with company requirements.
- Participate in incident investigations and implementation of corrective actions where required.
- Maintain accurate HSEQ records and ensure required site documentation is completed and submitted.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives relating to safety, quality, environmental performance and work practices.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Demonstrated experience supervising asphalt paving, road construction and reinstatement and associated civil works within the civil construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of asphalt placement, paving, compaction and pavement construction methodologies.
- Experience coordinating asphalt and civil crews, subcontractors, plant and material deliveries.
- Experience delivering major road and civil infrastructure projects.
- Experience working to Main Roads WA and WALGA specifications will be highly regarded.
- Strong planning, leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications and work programs.
- Current Australian HR Driver's Licence
- Construction White Card.
Desirable
- Tickets/licences for rollers, skid steers, or other civil plant.
- Traffic Management accreditation.
- First Aid certification.
- Proficiency in project management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
