The key duties of the position include:
The Role
East and West Zone are looking to fill Assistant Base Manager role with Edinburgh Defence Precinct. As Assistant Base Manager, you will build strong relationships with various military, civilian and contractor stakeholders with a shared focus on the management and upkeep of the Base to support operational, training and other specialist functions.
In this role, you build strong relationships with military, civilian, and contractor stakeholders, focusing on sustainable management to enable operational, training, and specialist functions. Work environments can include weapon ranges, airfields, wharves, laboratories, heritage sites, and modern offices.
Typical responsibilities include engaging with Defence stakeholders to address operational enquiries, collaborating with industry partners on infrastructure, maintenance, and estate outcomes, and contributing to forums that support base activities and capabilities. Base Management staff also ensure compliance with security, WHS, and emergency management standards, and may assist Defence in supporting the civil community during crises. Working within a “team-of-teams,” these roles contribute directly to maintaining and enhancing Defence capability and national security through effective estate planning and base operations.
A valid driver’s license is required for these roles.
About our Team The East & West Zone (EWZ) is a branch of the Service Delivery Division within the Department of Defence Security and Estate Group (SEG). EWZ provides essential, on-the-ground services and support to Defence personnel at locations across New South Wales (excluding the Riverina), Western Australia, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
EWZ Teams are responsible for effectively securing, managing and maintaining Defence Bases across Australia. This work is a critical business enabler of Defence capabilities, prioritising base resources and ensuring service delivery standards across the Defence estate.

- Demonstrated people leadership or team management experience in an operational or service delivery environment;
- Highly developed communication, organisation and negotiation skills with the ability to influence a broad range of stakeholders;
- Able to confidently work collaboratively with various military, civilian and contractor stakeholders;
- Demonstrated ability to think critically, identify issues and drive continuous improvement activities;
- The ability to research policy and procedure and determine practical outcomes that achieve objectives;
- Proven experience in providing detailed professional and policy advice about complex work;
- Proven experience identifying and anticipating stakeholders' needs and expectations to achieve outcomes;
- The ability to forward plan a workload and the agility to reprioritise at short notice.
Eligibility
Security Clearance:
Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.
