About the Archdiocese of Brisbane:

With a 150-year history and a deep commitment to serving the communities of South East Queensland, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane is a diverse and far-reaching organisation. Its work extends well beyond parish life, encompassing education, social services, early childhood, aged care, disability services, community outreach and pastoral ministries. With more than 15,000 employees, the Archdiocese is one of Queensland’s largest employers, bringing together a complex network of parishes, schools, agencies and Catholic organisations, each contributing to its broader mission and impact.

The appointment of the Most Reverend Shane Mackinlay as Archbishop of Brisbane in 2025 marks an important recent chapter for the Archdiocese.

With its significant reach and influence, the Archdiocese plays an important role in the social fabric of the communities it serves.

About the Role:

Reporting directly to the Archbishop of Brisbane, the Chief of Staff will provide strategic leadership, executive coordination and enterprise-wide delivery oversight across the Archdiocese.

This is a pivotal role at the centre of the organisation, responsible for helping translate the Archbishop’s vision and priorities into coordinated action. Working closely with the Archbishop, Vicar General, Vicars and senior leaders, the Chief of Staff will connect people, priorities and decisions, bringing greater alignment and momentum to the organisation.

The role will provide trusted strategic advice, coordinate critical priorities, oversee significant strategic and transformation initiatives, and identify and manage risks and interdependencies.

It will strengthen executive governance and decision-making while ensuring that agreed priorities maintain momentum and translate into tangible outcomes.

The Chief of Staff will help the Archdiocese operate more effectively as a coordinated and mission-focussed organisation, understanding how its many parts connect and identifying opportunities for greater collaboration. The role will provide the Archbishop and executive leadership with the clarity, visibility and capacity to focus on what matters most.

At its heart, this is an Executive Integrator role: Connecting vision with execution, people with priorities and strategy with outcomes.

About the Person:

This role will suit an experienced senior leader who has operated successfully within a large, complex and diverse organisation. They will be comfortable navigating multiple functions, perspectives and priorities, with the curiosity to understand what makes each part of the Archdiocese unique and the ability to see how those parts can work together more effectively.

The successful candidate will pair strategic thinking with a strong focus on execution, bringing the discipline and capability to turn complex priorities into tangible outcomes. Sound judgement, discretion and the ability to navigate change will be equally important.

The role will require a highly relational leader who can build trust while having the confidence to ask the hard questions,

negotiate effectively and hold people to account. They will be astute, able to read organisational dynamics, understand different perspectives and build genuine alignment across senior clergy, executives and other stakeholders.

Crucially, they will be able to lead by influence and encouragement rather than relying only on formal authority. They will know when to listen, when to challenge, when to seek further information and when to make a decision, earning the trust and credibility needed to bring people with them. They will be someone who can step into a complex situation, quickly understand the landscape, identify what is getting in the way and create a practical path forward.

The successful candidate will be a values-driven leader with a genuine affinity for the mission of the Catholic Church. They will bring integrity, humility, and a commitment to service to their leadership, together with a deep respect for the Church, its traditions and its role in the community. They will understand and value the important contribution of the Archdiocese’s diverse ministries, agencies and communities, and bring the maturity to work within this environment with authenticity, humility and respect.

Ultimately, this is a role for a leader who can see the whole, understand the parts and connect the two. Someone who can bring clarity to complexity, strengthen organisational cohesion and ensure priorities are translated into meaningful outcomes.
