The Role The Defence Science and Technology Group is seeking motivated candidates with a passion for computational modelling to support the development of advanced modelling and simulation capabilities to support a range of Defence capabilities and operations.

You will apply your knowledge of mathematics, physics, engineering, or computer science to implement mathematical modelling solutions, contribute to technical investigations, and support integration and evaluation activities.

As a Combat Management Systems modeller you will contribute to the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of software algorithms and mathematical models representing core combat and mission system functions; including tracking, threat evaluation and weapon allocation (TEWA), decision-making, and supporting engagement behaviours. Working within an experienced team of scientists and engineers, you will assist in the development of software components operating within distributed simulation environments. These environments leverage modern software principles to represent complex operational systems.

At the S&T; 4 level, you will undertake more complex technical tasks with increasing independence, contributing to the design and implementation of modelling components and supporting technical analysis activities.

About our Team

Our team undertakes research and development in modelling, simulation, and algorithm design to support Defence capability development and operational analysis.

Our work includes

- Modelling of combat and mission system functional behaviours
- Algorithm development for tracking, threat evaluation and weapon allocation (TEWA), decision-making, and autonomy
- Integration of modelling components within a range of stand-alone and federated simulation systems
- Investigation and application of best-of-breed and novel combat management system algorithms
- Enable complex systems and systems-of-systems analysis in support of Defence clients.

We collaborate closely with Defence clients, industry partners, and international research organisations to deliver scientifically rigorous and operationally relevant modelling and simulation capabilities.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is a recent graduate or early-career qualified with strong analytical capability, an interest in modelling and simulation of complex systems, with experience in programming being advantageous.

You will demonstrate

- A degree in physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, a related discipline or equivalent relevant experience
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, grounded in quantitative methods
- Programming experience, ideally in C++, Python and/or MATLAB
- The ability to work collaboratively within a technical team
- Good written and verbal communication skills.

At the APS 4 level, you will also demonstrate:
- The ability to apply technical knowledge to solve well-defined modelling and simulation problems
- Sound judgement in implementing and testing technical solutions
- The ability to contribute to technical documentation and reporting.
