Employment Opportunity The Attorney-General's Department (AGD) is seeking an experienced and organised Executive Level 2 Officer to lead the Cabinet Section within the Strategy and Governance Branch.
The department plays a key role in supporting the Australian Government's development of policy and legislative proposals that strengthen Australia's law and justice system, upholding the rule of law and supporting the Attorney General as First Law Officer. Our engagement with the Cabinet process is an important part of this role, ensuring the Attorney-General is supported in contributing to significant government decisions and policy outcomes.
The Director of Cabinet will lead a small team to:
- Lead and coordinate briefing for the Secretary and Attorney-General for Cabinet and Cabinet Committee meetings, including chairing pre-briefs and de-briefs for the Secretary.
- Exercise judgement and actively engage with others to consolidate Cabinet comments, shaping and prioritising the department's input to ensure a explicit, cohesive and 'One AGD' view.
- Lead the department and portfolio in relation to Cabinet processes, including coordinating and providing strategic support to line areas progressing Cabinet Submissions.
- Ensure Cabinet clearance policies, workflow and guidance effectively supports the department's engagement with the Cabinet process.
- Develop and deliver a program of education initiatives to build organisational capability, ensuring all staff understand how they can contribute to the department's engagement in the Cabinet process.
- Finalise and implement process improvements to create efficiencies in how the department manages Cabinet work and to implement new procedures from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

We are seeking a candidate with the ability to work strategically and collaboratively, influence stakeholders, deliver outcomes in a fast-paced environment, and develop and maintain excellent relationships across the department at all levels.
The ideal candidate will
- Be comfortable working with senior executives and ministerial advisers, delegate tasks effectively, and manage and prioritise a large and varied workload, with some out of hours work required.
- Demonstrate excellent judgement and a sound understanding of the department's policy responsibilities, with the skills and attributes to foster a positive and supportive working environment within the section.
- Be comfortable working irregular hours on occasion, particularly during peak periods, with rostering arrangements in place to support this.
Experience drafting and reviewing Cabinet submissions and preparing Cabinet comments will be advantageous.
To be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General’s Department applicants must be Australian citizens.
Applicants offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The successful applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.
Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a probation period.
A merit pool of suitable applicants may be created from this process, and will be active for 18 months after the date of this gazettal.
