Location: DERRIMUT, VIC
Salary: Above Award
Job Type: Permanent position | Full time position
Piber Plastics Australia is an Australian-owned manufacturer of injection moulded plastic packaging, supplying food, dairy and retail brands along with customers across the broader packaging market. Since opening in 1999, the business has grown into a modern 5,400 square metre production site in Derrimut, in Melbourne's west, where advanced moulding technology works alongside HACCP-accredited systems. An in-house design capability sets Piber apart, helping customers take an idea through to a practical, well-made plastic product, and many return for the consistent quality, dependable turnaround times and personal service the team is known for.
With production running on a wide range of presses, moulds and automated equipment, we are now looking for a skilled Fitter who takes pride in keeping machinery reliable, safe and ready to run. Fitter | Piber Plastics Australia Pty Ltd | Derrimut, VIC Key Responsibilities
- Review each fitting, repair or modification job before starting, choosing the right material, method and order of work and working out the machine settings needed to complete it properly.
- Carry out scheduled and breakdown maintenance on injection moulding machines, robots, conveyors and ancillary plant, including the hydraulic and pneumatic systems that power them.
- Mount, align and change over injection moulds, setting clamps, locating rings, guides, stops and robot end-of-arm tooling so each product run starts cleanly and on time.
- Find the root cause of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic faults on the production floor and restore equipment quickly to keep downtime and lost output to a minimum.
- Fit and assemble fabricated steel components, brackets, guards, frames and replacement machine parts,
both in the workshop and on installed equipment.
- Work to the site's HACCP and hygiene requirements when maintaining equipment that produces food and dairy packaging, including tool and parts control, food-grade lubricants and a thorough clean-down after every job.
- Machine, cut, grind, drill, bore and face metal stock and castings on the lathe, mill, drill press, grinder and hydraulic press to make or modify parts, mould components and fixtures.
- Measure new and repaired parts with micrometers, verniers, dial indicators and feeler gauges to confirm dimensions, clearances, alignment and fit before they go back into service.
- Look after the moulds between runs by cleaning, polishing and lubricating them and replacing worn ejector pins, springs, seals, O-rings and water fittings.
- Cut, thread, bend and install hydraulic and pneumatic pipework, hoses and fittings on presses, robots and auxiliary equipment, and trace and repair leaks.
- Plan maintenance with production supervisors and machine setters around the production schedule, and support the design team during new mould trials and first-off sampling.
- Set up and fine-tune the mechanical and control sequences that govern each moulding cycle, such as ejector, core-pull and robot pick-and-place movements, as well as the settings on in-line cutting, stacking and handling equipment.
- Maintain mould temperature controllers, chillers,
cooling water circuits, material dryers and the compressed air system that supports production.
- Install, level, anchor and commission new moulding machines, granulators, dryers and conveyors, and relocate existing equipment when the production floor is reconfigured.
- Record breakdowns, repairs, parts used and completed preventive maintenance so each machine keeps an accurate service history.
- Follow safe work procedures at all times, including isolation and lockout, machine guarding and permit requirements, and keep the workshop clean and organised.
- Keep track of critical spare parts, raise purchase requests and liaise with suppliers and specialist service technicians when outside support is needed.
- Suggest practical improvements to equipment, tooling and maintenance routines that reduce breakdowns, scrap and cycle times.
Qualifications and Experience
- At least 1 year of experience as a Fitter or in a comparable mechanical fitting and maintenance role, ideally in a manufacturing environment.
- AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV, preferably in a mechanical engineering trade.
Hours: 38 hours per week - Full-time Salary: $75,000 to $85,000 plus superannuation per annum Personal Attributes
- A practical problem solver who stays calm and methodical during breakdowns
- Precise and careful, with a positive eye for detail and tolerances
- Reliable, organised and able to manage priorities in a busy plant
- Keen to learn current equipment and take ownership of their work
