Fair Work Lawyers was founded by two former big-firm lawyers who were fed up with the politics, hierarchy and obsession with billable hours that define much of the legal profession. So, they created a firm where great lawyers could do great work.
We’re a team of seven, with a balance of experience and a healthy amount of humour. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we take the law seriously. You’ll find us working hard on complex matters, but also happy to head to the pub and talk shop (or not). We’re outcome focused, not input-obsessed and we don’t count billable hours for the sake of it.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Graduate Lawyer (1 year PAE) to join our growing team, with a focus on employment law and litigation. You’ll get hands-on experience and real responsibility from day one including running files (with support), appearing in tribunals and courts and advising SME clients across a range of sectors.
This role is perfect for someone currently in a mixed or generalist practice who wants to narrow their focus, do real work (not doc review) and be mentored by genuinely invested senior lawyers.
What You’ll Do
- Advise employer clients on employment law matters (unfair dismissal, enterprise bargaining, general protections, award compliance and more).
- Appear in the Fair Work Commission and other courts/tribunals (with support where needed).
- Work across a mix of matters (mostly employment, but with some exposure to contractual disputes, construction law and the occasional wills & estates matter).
- Draft advice, prepare pleadings and correspondence, and manage files autonomously (while still learning and growing).
- Participate in regular performance catchups every 6 months, where bonuses are discussed based on contribution, not billables.
