About Our Client - The Sunrise Project Australia The Sunrise Project Australia is a not-for-profit organisation working to address the climate crisis and accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. Through research, advocacy, campaigning, grantmaking and collaboration, the organisation supports people and movements working towards lasting environmental outcomes.
About the Role The Sunrise Project Australia is seeking an Indigenous Board Director to bring First Nations perspectives, knowledge and leadership to its Australian Board. The appointment of a second Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Director is an key priority. It will strengthen the range of perspectives represented and reduce the burden that can arise from being the only First Nations voice on a Board.
Working collectively with the Board and Board Chair, the successful candidate will contribute to the organisation’s strategy, governance and impact. Previous Board experience is welcomed but is not essential. Governance training and development can be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the Board’s strategic direction and governance
- Bring First Nations perspectives to discussions and decisions
- Provide thoughtful oversight of organisational opportunities and risks
- Review Board papers and participate actively in meetings
- Contribute collaboratively to a respectful and reflective Board culture
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with strong judgement, emotional intelligence and a collaborative approach.
Experience or knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be valued:
- Australian climate and energy politics
- First Nations justice, climate change or the energy transition
- Organisational leadership, succession or governance
- Digital media, artificial intelligence or the changing information environment
- Organisational change and navigating complexity
Board Commitment The commitment includes three all-day Board meetings each year, an annual two-day in-person retreat and participation in one of the Board’s four committees. Committee meetings are generally held quarterly.
The appointment is open to candidates across Australia, with travel required for face-to-face meetings. A modest annual stipend is provided, and relevant travel and accommodation expenses are covered.
