About the role The National Media Officer plays a key role in enhancing and protecting the CFMEU's public profile through timely, accurate and strategic communications. Working closely with branches, national office staff, administration and the broader media team, this role is responsible for media monitoring, content production and stakeholder media management to help strengthen the union.
Key responsibilities
- Draft and distribute media releases, statements, briefing materials and other communications products within tight timeframes
- Monitor daily media coverage and emerging issues across the construction industry, industrial relations landscape and union campaigns, identifying risks, opportunities and emerging trends
- Build and maintain effective relationships with journalists, editors, producers and other media stakeholders
- Prepare briefing notes, key messages, talking points, Q&As; and interview materials for union officials and spokespersons
- Develop engaging content for digital, social media and other communication channels
- Support the planning and delivery of national and branch campaigns, communications strategies and media activities
- Coordinate media events, press conferences, interviews, site visits and other public-facing engagements
- Maintain media databases, contact lists, communication assets and records of media coverage
- Work collaboratively with branches, National Office staff, administration and external stakeholders to ensure communications are accurate, consistent and aligned with organisational priorities
- Contribute to the development of proactive media opportunities that promote the union's campaigns, achievements and advocacy objectives
About you
- Demonstrated experience in media relations, strategic communications and content development, with a minimum of three years' experience in journalism or public relations
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, compelling and accurate content for a range of audiences and platforms
- Solid news sense and the ability to identify media opportunities, manage emerging issues and work effectively under tight deadlines
- Sound understanding of the trade union movement, industrial relations and issues affecting workers in the construction and related industries
- Proven ability to build and maintain productive relationships with journalists, editors, producers and other media stakeholders
- Highly developed organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet competing deadlines and maintain attention to detail
- High levels of discretion, professionalism and judgement when handling sensitive, confidential or politically complex matters
- Commitment to union values, including social justice, equity, and collective action
