Role Description This is a full-time, in office Postdoctoral Researcher role based in Melbourne, VIC, focused on the secure containment of AI agents. The successful candidate will design, implement, and evaluate experimental frameworks and protocols that ensure safe deployment and control of advanced AI systems, including simulation-based and laboratory-based containment setups. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting original research, data collection and analysis, preparing manuscripts, contributing to grant applications, and presenting findings at seminars and conferences.

The role also involves collaborating with faculty, students, and external partners in related fields such as AI safety, physics-informed modeling, and security, as well as contributing to teaching, mentoring, and supervision of students where required.



The postdoc is expected to engage actively with the university’s research community and uphold best practices in research integrity and reproducibility.

Qualifications

- Strong research skills, including experimental design, theoretical development, and scholarly writing in areas related to AI safety, physics, computer science, or a closely aligned discipline.

- Laboratory skills relevant to secure experimentation with computational systems or physical testbeds, including protocol development, experimental setup, and rigorous documentation.

- Proficiency in physics or related quantitative fields, with the ability to apply physical and mathematical principles to modeling and analyzing AI containment systems.

- Data analysis capabilities, including statistical methods, computational modeling, and use of relevant software tools or programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R).

- Teaching and mentoring experience or potential, such as assisting in courses, leading tutorials, or supervising student projects in technical or research-focused subjects.

- PhD (or near completion) in physics, computer science, AI, engineering, or a related field with a strong research track record.

- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and communicate complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences.

- Familiarity with AI safety, security, or ethical implications of advanced AI systems is highly desirable.

- Evidence of publications in reputable journals or conferences and willingness to contribute to grant writing and research dissemination.
