About the role
National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Project Officer to provide advice and support the evaluation, reporting and MERI framework of the NPWS fire management program. Providing strategic business and data analytics, guidance and insights leading to improved planning and decision-making in the program.
This role belongs to our Bushfire Risk and Evaluation Unit (BR&E;).
The Bushfire
Risk and Evaluation Unit (BR&E;) supports the development of the NSW bushfire risk framework to embed environmental risk modelling into fire and land management planning and evaluation. The Unit
- improves the utility, accessibility, and availability of fire related data to enable program reporting and evaluation, and
- develops bushfire risk assessment, prediction, and planning tools.
The position supports the development of data systems, metrics, reporting and evaluation of the NPWS Fire Management Program, the Bush Fire Risk Management Planning business intelligence platform and the Ecological Health Performance Scorecards. The Unit works closely with the NSW Rural Fire Service to support the developing of the next generation of Bush Fire Risk Management Plans by Bush Fire Management Committees across NSW.
About You
You will have qualifications and / or experience in a role supporting the measurement, modelling, reporting and/or evaluation/review of policy, strategy, portfolio, program or project outcomes and benefits. You have experience in improving, validating and automating data flows from corporate systems into analytical analysis and reports as part of a reporting framework.
You’re organised and proactive with a genuine interest in protecting natural spaces and supporting on‑ground outcomes. You enjoy keeping day‑to‑day project activities running smoothly while identifying risks early, assessing impacts and supporting well‑reasoned decisions that help deliver safe and sustainable projects across our parks.
You work confidently with a wide range of stakeholders, from field teams to contractors and community partners, and you know how to communicate clearly, coordinate working groups and influence others to support safety,
environmental and project‑risk strategies. Whether preparing documentation, tracking milestones, analysing data or assisting with procurement and contract administration, you bring sound judgement, attention to detail and a calm approach.
In this role, you’ll contribute to project development and delivery, support reporting and evaluation, and help keep projects aligned with National Parks’ environmental, cultural and community priorities.
The Project Officer works within the Bushfire Risk and Evaluation Unit’s Evaluation and Metrics team. The team is responsible for developing the technical and analytical capability in NPWS to provide strategic business analytics, guidance and insights to senior management supporting improved strategic planning and decision-making in the NPWS fire and incident management program.
To achieve this outcome, the Project Officer will specifically:
- Support the provision of strategic analytics, guidance and insights to senior management leading to improved planning and decision-making in the NPWS fire and incident management program including the multi-agency Bush Fire Risk Management Planning process.
- Support the evaluation, monitoring and reporting of the NPWS fire and incident management program, including delivering improvements to the efficiency, accessibility, and availability of fire and incident related data.
- Support the development of NPWS fire and incident management program performance monitoring to identify trends and areas for improvement, including developing tools and forecasting models.
- Support the development of priority risk analytic benchmarking models to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and analyse financial and asset data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Support the development of fire and incident management reporting business requirements with operational, systems and finance teams to ensure strategic analytics, guidance and insights meets stakeholder needs.
- Support the delivery of the external program evaluations of NPWS fire and incident management program.
- Support the development of business intelligence platforms to providing robust forecasting and performance reporting capabilities that influence leadership insights and decisions.
- Support, with program partners,
the development of bush fire risk and landscape ecological fire monitoring metrics.
- Liaise with stakeholders, researchers, and software vendors to maintain strategic alliances to enhance activities and lead to improved fire management program business analytics and forecasting tools.
- Undertake operational fire roles including consistent competencies obtained.
Willingness and ability to travel and work in remote and challenging outdoor environments where a moderate level of fitness is required.
Essential requirements
- Appropriate tertiary qualifications and/or equivalent relevant working experience in project management.
- Experience in development and delivery of projects, including the development of project plans, monitoring of project timelines, budgets and reporting requirements, and contract administration.
