About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for a 3-month contract to drive core workflow orchestration, SDK modernization, and cloud-native microservices initiatives.

Working alongside an elite team with ex-Google pedigree, you will take ownership of designing automated data pipelines using Google Cloud Composer (Apache Airflow), building high-performance asynchronous microservices with FastAPI, and deploying scalable solutions across Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Key Responsibilities

- Workflow Orchestration & Pipelines: Lead the design, optimization, and management of end-to-end data pipelines and dynamic Airflow DAGs using Google Cloud Composer.
- Async Python Microservices: Architect, build, and optimize high-throughput microservices using Python 3.x, AsyncIO, and FastAPI.
- Cloud Architecture & Integration: Deploy containerized applications (Docker) on GCP (Cloud Run, Cloud Functions) and integrate services with BigQuery, Cloud Dataflow, and Pub/Sub.
- SDK & API Modernization: Drive internal/external SDK design, API versioning, packaging, and integration across client ecosystems.
- DevOps & Quality: Maintain robust Git-based CI/CD workflows (GitHub Actions / Cloud Build) and ensure high test coverage using pytest.

What You Bring (Key Requirements)





- 5+ years of hands-on experience in backend software engineering, data orchestration, and cloud microservices.
- Mastery of Python 3.x, asynchronous programming (AsyncIO), and modern frameworks (FastAPI).
- Solid hands-on expertise with Apache Airflow / Google Cloud Composer (workflow authoring, dynamic task generation, custom operators).
- Proven experience with GCP infrastructure (Cloud Composer, Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, BigQuery, Pub/Sub).
- Hands-on containerization skills with Docker and automated CI/CD release engineering.
- Experience with API/SDK design, versioning, and testing frameworks (pytest).
- Location: Must be based in Victoria/Melbourne, Australia with valid work rights.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience managing and performance-tuning enterprise Airflow clusters.
- Practical experience publishing and maintaining internal or public Python SDK packages (PyPI).
- GCP Certifications (Skilled Data Engineer, Cloud Architect, or Cloud Developer).
- Stream processing experience with Apache Beam / Dataflow or Pub/Sub.
