Primary objective To lead the design, delivery and evaluation of training and capability building programs in the Alice Springs Local Court registry, ensuring staff are skilled, confident and consistent in providing high-quality court services.
Context statement The Senior Development and Training Officer provide specialist training leadership across Local Court registries, ensuring court officers and senior court officers are skilled, confident and consistent in delivering high-quality court services.
The role designs, delivers and evaluates training programs, supports operational excellence, and contributes to a safe, positive and high performing registry culture. It also provides operational support in court and registry environments, including on circuit.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Lead the design, delivery and evaluation of training programs for Court Officers and Senior Court Officers across all jurisdictions,
including youth justice, ensuring consistent and competent practice.
- Provide structured onboarding, coaching and mentoring, supporting staff capability development, performance improvement and operational confidence in a high‑pressure registry.
- Support accurate and timely processing of court outcomes, including orders, warrants, summonses, data entry and courtroom operations, modelling best‑practice standards.
- Provide sound operational advice to judicial officers, legal practitioners, court users and staff on court practices, procedures and legislative requirements.
- Contribute to a safe, culturally responsive and positive workplace culture, supporting staff wellbeing, resilience and continuous improvement.
- Support circuit court operations across Central Australia, including travel to remote communities and providing training and operational assistance during circuit sittings.
- Maintain and update training materials, operational guides and capability records, and support digital transformation, system changes and process improvements.
Selection criteria
Essential
- Detailed knowledge of Local Court practices, procedures and legislation, or the proven ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge in a complex operational environment.
- Demonstrated capability in designing, delivering and evaluating training programs for staff in high-volume, high-pressure environments, including structured onboarding, mentoring and skills development.
- Solid leadership and coaching skills, with the ability to build capability, support performance development and foster a positive,
culturally responsive and safe workplace.
- High-level communication and cross-cultural competency, including the ability to work effectively with Aboriginal clients, judicial officers, legal practitioners and diverse stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage competing priorities, exercise sound judgement and maintain accuracy under pressure, including during peak workloads and rapid operational changes.
- Excellent written skills, including preparing training materials, operational guidance, reports and legal documentation with a high degree of clarity and accuracy.
Desirable
- Tertiary qualification in Training, Leadership and Management, or similar.
