Description

Position purpose:

The purpose of this role is to assist and support the Reporting Accountant in and management of financial accounting systems and operations across the Queensland Synod ensuring the services and reports are cost effective, efficient and aligned to the Synod’s strategic plans.

Key responsibilities:

- Administer the effective and efficient operation of the reporting requirements of the Finance Function to meet the service requirements of the Synod Office, Agencies, Congregations and other internal and external customers.
- Coordinate with the Reporting Accountant and Senior Accountant, the review and preparation of appropriate financial statements and year-end certification from management ensuring they reflect the corresponding financial records and reports.
- Ensure reconciliations, administration of general ledger records and system administration reflect accurate and complete accounting information.
- Contribute to preparing regular financial reporting with respect to monthly, quarterly and annual reports (Including Synod Standing Committee, FIP Board, Other Committees & Commissions, ELT) and the required periodic reconciliation process.
- Support the Business & Processing Advisor to identify and implement productivity initiatives relating to the processing work flows within Finance.
- Recommend, develop and support a process of continuous improvement in the reporting and overall reconciliation processes within the Finance Function, including technical leadership of Accounting Standards and reporting requirements.
- In consultation with Reporting Accountant prepare and review the various statutory tax and accounting obligations including but not limited to BAS returns, FBT returns, Land tax.
- Assist and support the Reporting Accountant in the delegation and completion of general ledger reconciliation process to finance team members.
- Work with the Reporting Accountant to support the completion of Annual Statutory Financial Statements and contribute to the audit process.
- Obtain an understanding of Treasury activities to compliment the Treasury report review process.
- Promote and maintain a positive customer service focus and cooperative interface in the delivery of financial information services.




- Develop a full understanding of the operations of the Synod office and the church entities in which services are provided to and identify/promote continuous improvement and simplification of process initiatives through collaboration and automation.
- Liaise and engage in effective communication with internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to auditors, legislators, presbytery and other externals customers.
- Lead/oversee ad hoc Projects in relation to accounting/finance issues.
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of all culture elements and values. Embody and continually demonstrate the value-based behaviours by setting a clear clean and consistent example for others.
- Model the values of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod in day to day work including interactions with managers, lay staff, ministry agents, clients and stakeholders.
- Compliance with Queensland Synod policies, procedures and relevant legislation.
- Comply with Health and Safety directions and Public Health directions.
- Undertake other duties as and when directed within the scope of the role and the capabilities of the incumbent.

Key performance indicators:

- Meet the changing needs of the Synod Office by ensuring continuous improvement within the recording and processing of transactions in a timely manner.
- Monthly, quarterly and annual reporting is completed and delivered as per agreed timeframes.
- Finance team members are supported to undertake allocated reconciliations on a timely basis.
- Assess and introduce innovation initiatives that result in productivity improvements.
- Comply with delegations of the Office of Synod where delegations have been permanently or temporarily assigned to the position.
- Maintain alignment with the Office of Synod purpose, culture and values (values referenced under additional requirements).

- This position reports to the Reporting Accountant

Requirements

Selection criteria:

Qualifications

- Business tertiary degree in Accounting and/or Finance
- Eligibility for qualified membership of an Australian Accounting body

Experience and skills:




- Demonstrated experience in driving efficiencies and providing leadership to the diverse functions in accounting operations and financial reporting, meeting deadlines and presenting complex financial information in a user-friendly manner.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and develop direct reports and collaborate within a team environment with a willingness to contribute in a positive and respectful manner.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current Accounting standards and audit requirements as well as certain legislative compliance areas such as FBT, GST and other tax administration.
- Direct experience in managing a statutory audit process and other associated compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of Treasury and Insurance activities is preferred but not essential
- Understanding of various accounting and finance systems as well as various Microsoft Office packages and their administration. Intermediate and above financial modelling skills are preferred.
- Proven ability to report and work directly with a General Manager Finance and other members of senior management and liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to draft correspondence and interact with a diverse range of people.
- Demonstrated commitment to high quality outcomes including high attention to detail, accuracy and confidentiality.
- Is personable with a commitment to building strong relationships with key stakeholders and customers across the Church and its agencies, boards and committees of the Synod
- Demonstrated attention to detail, timeliness, analytical and focused on outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to act with impartiality and honesty
- Commitment to working within the purpose and values of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod and adhering to the policies, organisational requirements and processes

Additional requirements:

- Current Driver’s license.
- National Criminal History Check to be provided and assessed every three years. Presentation of a current National Criminal History Check must be made before appointment to the position can be confirmed.
- Professional membership – current member of an Australian Accounting body being either Institute of Chartered Accountants or CPA Australia.
- The successful applicant must be eligible to legally work in Australia and proof of eligibility may be requested.
- Behave in accordance with the values of the Office of the Synod.
