About the role
Sydney Academy of Chess (SAC) is seeking a Software Engineer to maintain, develop and implement its web-based applications and systems.
The role involves maintaining and enhancing SAC's existing legacy applications while contributing to the development and implementation of new web applications and systems as SAC modernises its technology platforms. The Software Engineer will work across full-stack development, application programming, APIs, databases, integrations,
application security, testing, deployment and hosting infrastructure.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain, support and enhance SAC's existing web applications and legacy systems.
- Analyse existing applications and identify technical limitations,
deficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
- Design, develop and implement new features and functionality across
SAC's web platforms.
- Contribute to the design and development of new web applications and systems as SAC modernises its technology platforms.
- Develop and maintain full-stack web applications using technologies including JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Next.js and Node.js.
- Maintain existing PHP-based applications and develop enhancements where required.
- Design, develop and maintain REST APIs and integrations with internal and third-party services.
- Develop and maintain database-driven functionality using SQL and relational database technologies, including PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.
- Integrate and maintain third-party services, including payment gateways and other APIs.
- Test, debug, diagnose and resolve application errors and faults.
- Implement authentication, access control and other application security measures.
- Maintain and improve application performance, reliability and data integrity.
- Maintain and support web hosting and deployment infrastructure and assist with application performance, reliability and availability.
- Maintain Git-based development workflows and CI/CD processes.
- Develop, test, deploy and troubleshoot software across development and production environments.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, system documentation and operational procedures as required.
- Maintain and manage systems supporting SAC's public websites,
management systems, school competitions, tournaments, ratings and
ChessSquad services.
- Perform other software development, application maintenance and related duties relevant to the role.
Skills and experience
- Relevant tertiary qualification in information technology, computer science, software engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Professional experience in full-stack web development and maintaining database-driven web applications.
- Solid JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript skills.
- Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks, including React and Next.js.
- Experience with Node.js and REST API development.
- Experience with HTML5, CSS3, Tailwind CSS and responsive web development.
- Experience with SQL and relational database systems, including
PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.
- Experience maintaining PHP applications, including object-oriented and MVC-based systems.
- Experience with Git and GitHub-based development workflows.
- Experience integrating payment gateways and third-party APIs.
- Understanding of web application security, authentication and protection of sensitive data.
- Experience with web hosting, deployment and CI/CD workflows.
- Ability to work across existing legacy systems while contributing to the development of new software platforms.
