THE PROSPECT
We are looking for a Systems Engineering Lead to lead the team responsible for system architecture, modelling and performance across our product portfolio, from chip-level functions through integrated hardware. This role works across antenna, RF, digital beamforming, modem, FPGA and ASIC. You will set the analytical framework for those decisions, guide engineers performing detailed simulation and ensure requirements remain grounded in measurable end-to-end system performance.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Lead and develop a systems engineering team working across multiple chip and hardware products.
- Own end-to-end system architectures, requirements, interfaces, performance budgets and verification strategies across the product portfolio.
- Own communication link budgets and system line-ups, including gain, noise, power, interference and implementation margins.
- Define calibration strategies for complex phased-array and digital-beamforming systems, connecting models, coefficient generation and hardware test.
- Establish system modelling frameworks in Python and MATLAB for beamforming, RF and digital performance, coverage, SINR, interference and link margin.
- Direct architecture trade-offs across beam count, element count, digital chains, subarray configurations, resource allocation and hardware constraints.
- Ensure models represent real implementation effects, including amplitude and phase error, quantisation, coupling, element failures, calibration residuals and pointing error.
- Translate product needs into clear antenna, RF, modem, FPGA and ASIC requirements, with traceability from system objectives to subsystem verification.
- Correlate analysis with antenna measurements and system-level test data, lead resolution of performance gaps and communicate recommendations through cross-functional design reviews.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- Substantial technical leadership experience in systems engineering for complex RF, communications or signal-processing products.
- Deep knowledge of phased arrays, digital beamforming, array signal processing and RF or wireless communication systems.
- Strong hands-on experience building numerical and system-level models in Python and/or MATLAB.
- Experience owning link budgets and performance analysis using measures such as SINR, EIRP, G/T, coverage, interference and link margin.
- A practical understanding of array behaviour, beam steering, sidelobes, scan loss, grating lobes, spatial processing and calibration.
- The ability to reason across antenna, RF, DSP, modem, FPGA, ASIC and integrated hardware boundaries.
- Experience turning physical-system behaviour and algorithm models into engineering requirements, interface definitions and verification plans.
- The technical depth to guide engineers developing detailed beamforming models while making portfolio-level architecture and priority decisions.
- A master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Physics or a related technical field.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE The following experience would be valuable:
- Experience with satellite or non-terrestrial communication systems.
- Experience with large multi-beam phased arrays, coverage analysis and link-budget-led optimisation.
- Knowledge of OFDM, 5G or 3GPP physical-layer concepts.
- Experience incorporating orbital geometry, attitude, pointing or guidance and navigation inputs into system models.
- Experience with C or C++, GPU or CUDA acceleration, or transitioning Python and MATLAB models towards FPGA or ASIC implementation.
WHY JOIN US This role offers the opportunity to define how systems engineering informs product decisions across silicon and hardware. You will build the team and methods that connect models, requirements, calibration and measured performance, giving each product a credible and testable system architecture. We value different experiences and perspectives. If you meet many, but not necessarily all, of the criteria and believe you can make a strong contribution, we encourage you to apply.
SECURITY REQUIREMENTS
Due to the nature of the technology developed by Atto Devices and our work in export-controlled sectors, this position requires access to information and technology subject to Australian defence export-control and security requirements. Applicants must be Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents and must be eligible to access the controlled technology required for the role. The successful candidate may also be required to obtain and maintain any security clearances, export-control authorisations or other approvals required for their work.
