Primary objective The Vehicle Compliance Permits Officer is responsible for assessing and issuing permits of exemption to allow the movement of oversize and over-mass (OSOM) vehicles and loads on the Northern Territory road network. The role also responds to enquiries from all sectors of the heavy vehicle industry across Australia.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Administer and assess OSOM permit applications for compliance with legislation, technical standards and guidelines.
- Engage with relevant authorities and agencies regarding complex permit applications that fall outside established guidelines to secure necessary input and obtain endorsements and approvals.
- Coordinate and assess large oversize loads in office, including transportable buildings and constructions, industrial equipment, mass and load restraints and confirmation and recording of load dimensions.
- Issue permits of exemption with appropriate conditions of operation, consistent with the NT OSOM Guidelines and legislative framework.
- Assist with compliance and enforcement activities of OSOM vehicles both on highways and at weighbridges to ensure safe vehicle operations and compliance with permit conditions.
- Consult with and provide process advice to Transport Inspectors on issues relating to permits of exemption.
- Maintain databases, generate reports, and supply information for approved requests.
- Administer payments for permits and reconcile payments in accordance with procedures.
Selection criteria
Essential
- Proven administrative experience, with the ability to use personal computer applications.
- Demonstrated ability to research, analyse and organise information, collaborate with industry and other departmental staff and apply policy to support effective decisions and problem-solving.
- Proven well developed written and verbal communications and interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise discretion and initiative.
- Knowledge of motor vehicle standards policies or relevant transferrable skills.
- Experience with accurate data entry and managing information in databases.
- Experience in providing quality customer services skills to manage inquiries and provide timely advice.
- Experience processing cash and electronic payments and reconciling accounts in accordance with approved procedures.
- Ability to understand legislation, regulatory frameworks, policies and procedures that apply to own work.
Desirable
- Indentured relevant trade (e.g. Motor Mechanic) or AQF III Certificate or higher or equivalent.
- Hold a current C class driver licence.
