Torbanlea

Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) was founded in 1977 and since that time, has been leading the industry globally by delivering critical national infrastructure in over 50 countries. A leader in the Korean rail industry, HRC has succeded in developing high-speed trains and is now establishing their presence in the Australian market.

Currently, the Australian operation of HRC is working on two major projects:

- The New Intercity Fleet (NIF) Project - a joint venture between HRC, UGL and MEA, this project is delivering a fleet of new intercity trains for operation in the NSW electrified rail network. The fleet comprises of 55 Long Units and 70 Short Units for the Newcastle, Blue Mountains, South Coast and Central Coast Lines; and
- The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) - a project commissioning, designing and constructing a new manufacturing facility in Torbanlea Qld and a new maintenance facility in Ormeau Qld. It includes manufacturing and delivering 65 EMU Train sets (390 cars) by the end of 2031.

Combined local and international design teams and suppliers will work together to ensure the delivery of manufacturing requirements and associated documentation to ensure that train sets locally manufactured in Australia meet the design, compliance, manufactuability, reliability, maintainability and safety specifications for the trains operational life for a minimum of at least 35 years.

HRC prides itself on hiring people committed to excellence and ensuring state of the art train designs that are focussed on safety, accessibility, reliability and comfort for passengers and operational rail staff that meet all of the latest safety specifications and standards.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Production Engineering Manager, the Welding Engineer develops, implements and maintains standard welding procedures and processes to achieve efficient, defect-free series production and structural integrity of Rollingstock Carbody assemblies.

The Welding Engineer is required to collaborate closely with the site-based production and welding teams, including its joint-venture partner, and overseas engineering design and metallurgy teams to ensure welding plans, WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications), and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) activities are optimised, welding distortion and risks mitigated, and quality opportunities realised.

The role requires the incumbent to assist in leading the Transfer of Technology (ToT) phase for welding technologies and robotic/manual welding processes of the project, transitioning through to steady-state production. This requires effective communication with multiple stakeholders, and the application of a meticulous can-do attitude to ensure strict compliance with welding standards (such as ISO 3834, EN 15085, or AWS), safety, and structural quality standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES and ACCOUNTABILITIES

- Work with welding coordinators in Korea to create and maintain technical welding documentation, including welding procedure specifications (WPS), establish and optimize precise welding sequences, modification instructions, weld quality tolerance standards, and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) protocols.

- Troubleshoot welding-related manufacturing issues on the shop floor, including defects such as cracks, porosity, or lack of fusion, and implement corrective actions.

- Refine welding parameters, joint designs, or build methodologies (e.g., weld sequence, heat input control) to align with production requirements and quality standards.

- Define and validate welding methods, equipment, tooling (e.g., fixtures, clamps),

and processes to meet series production targets for railway vehicle components.

- Balance the welding production line by analysing resource allocation, welder skill requirements, and cycle time.

- Ensure welding process instructions (e.g., WPS, work instructions) are production-ready and compliant with standards (ISO, AS/NZS, AWS), in collaboration with Production Engineering and the Zero Harm (safety) team

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Requirements

- Certified International Welding Engineer (IWE).
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
- Deep working knowledge of EN15085 and ISO 3834 standards.
- Proven experience in contemporary welding practices.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in stainless steel rollingstock carbody (or equivalent) production engineering.
- Solid understanding of rollingstock manufacturing and production processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Excel, etc.).
- Proficiency in CAD software, specifically CATIA and/or AutoCAD.
- Strong planning and organizational skills to manage multiple complex tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Robust negotiation and relationship-building skills with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently to prioritize tasks and manage demands.
