NSW Treasury is seeking expressions of interest from highly capable and strategic senior executive leaders for the role of Director, Federal Financial Relations, reporting to the Executive Director, Revenue Division.

Role impact and contribution
The Federal Financial Relations team plays a critical role in advising Government on Commonwealth-State financial arrangements, intergovernmental fiscal policy, National Cabinet reforms and funding agreements that have significant implications for New South Wales.
As Director, Federal Financial Relations, you will provide strategic leadership and expert policy advice on highly complex and politically sensitive issues affecting the State's financial position and broader policy agenda. You will lead the development of evidence-based policy advice, represent Treasury in high-level intergovernmental forums, and work closely with senior executives, central agencies and Commonwealth counterparts to influence outcomes in the interests of New South Wales.
Leading a high-performing team of policy professionals, you will oversee the delivery of strategic policy frameworks, analysis and advice in a complex and fast-paced environment, supporting executive decision-making and contributing to Treasury's broader policy and reform agenda.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing strategic evidence-based advice to Treasury's Executive and Government on federal financial relations, intergovernmental agreements and national policy reforms.
- Leading policy development, implementation and evaluation activities that support Treasury's strategic priorities and broader Government objectives.
- Representing Treasury in discussions and negotiations with Commonwealth agencies, other State and Territory Treasuries, and national forums.
- Identifying, evaluating and responding to highly complex, emerging and politically sensitive policy issues affecting New South Wales.
- Providing leadership and direction to a team of policy professionals to deliver high-quality policy outcomes.
- Building and maintaining effective relationships with senior stakeholders across government, industry, academia and other jurisdictions.
- Driving a collaborative, evidence-based approach to policy development and strategic problem-solving.
- Supporting workforce capability and fostering a high-performance culture focused on delivering results.
What you can bring to the role
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
- Extensive experience in policy development, implementation and evaluation within government or a similarly complex environment.
- Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to navigate complex public policy and intergovernmental issues.
- Demonstrated experience influencing senior stakeholders and negotiating outcomes across diverse interests.
- Excellent leadership and people management capability, including experience leading high-performing professional teams.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, concise and persuasive advice to executive decision-makers.
- Political acumen, sound judgement and the ability to manage sensitive issues in a high-pressure environment.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in economics, finance, public administration or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
