The Legal & Governance Officer is responsible for providing legal support for the development and application of strong, consistent and transparent governance, quality and risk frameworks and programs.This position is responsible for supporting the completion of legal and governance-related activities in a timely and professional manner that is compliant with relevant legislation and local government standards.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the preparation of high-quality documents including policies, procedures, guidelines, correspondence, land title documents, briefings, reports and other documents as required.
- Research legal issues and draft advice as directed by the General Counsel & Manager, Legal, Governance and Council Business (GCLG) in relation to complex legal matters affecting Council.
- Assist the GCLG with the management of TRC’s property portfolio including preparation of licences, leases, asset disposals and acquisitions, boundary realignments.
- Liaise with the Strategic Assets team regarding property management matters, including but not limited to tenant obligations under agreements.
- Provide advice and internal support as required to meet TRC’s obligations under the Complaints Management Policy and Procedure.
- Undertake projects and initiatives that improve governance systems and procedures in consultation with TRC staff.
- Support the GCLG to review and implement TRC’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework and maintain Corporate and Operational Risk Registers.
- Assist the GCLG to review and updated TRC’s Register of Delegations.
- Work as a member of the broader Legal & Governance team to effectively manage workloads to ensure that required deadlines are met and outcomes are achieved in a professional manner.
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation and local government standards.
- Provide effective customer service and build professional relationships with key internal stakeholders and external organisations/agencies.
- Maintain related business systems and records.
- All other duties commensurate with this level.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Laws Degree or equivalent
- Experience working in a legal, governance, and/or risk management environment.
- Ability to prepare skilled correspondence
- Demonstrated time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines under pressure while ensuring accuracy and quality of work
- Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills, whilst effectively managing confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Customer service skills and the ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships.
- Proficient computer literacy with excellent skills in MS Office suite of applications.
