The Opportunity

We are seeking an accomplished and forward-thinking executive to lead Council's Sustainable Development Division.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Director Sustainable Development will provide strategic leadership across a diverse portfolio that includes:

- Development Assessment and Building Certification
- Environmental Health and Regulatory Services
- Land Use Planning
- Economic and Destination Development
- Natural Systems
- Development Engineering

You will lead the Division's strategic direction, governance, financial sustainability and operational performance, ensuring services are responsive, trusted and aligned with Council's Community Strategic Plan and Delivery Program.

In this role, you will:

- Lead the delivery of Council's housing, growth and development priorities across the MidCoast region.
- Guide the effective integration of planning, development, environmental, regulatory, engineering and economic perspectives.
- Provide trusted strategic advice to the General Manager, Leadership Team, Extended MANEX and Council.
- Oversee the Division's financial, operational, workforce and service delivery performance.
- Ensure statutory obligations, governance requirements and risk management frameworks are effectively maintained.




- Build strong relationships with the community, government agencies, industry, staff and other stakeholders.
- Lead the delivery of environmental management, natural systems protection, public health and regulatory outcomes.
- Support investment, tourism, destination development and economic growth across the region.
- Champion continuous improvement, innovation and sustainable service delivery.
- Develop capable and confident leaders and foster a positive, inclusive and values-led working environment.
- Represent Council at relevant forums, industry groups, committees and legal proceedings as required.

You will bring sound judgement, political awareness and the ability to make balanced decisions in an environment where community, environmental, economic, regulatory and infrastructure priorities intersect.

What you'll bring

You will be an experienced senior executive or leader with a strong record of leading complex, multidisciplinary services in local government or a comparable organisation.

You will also bring:

- Relevant tertiary qualifications in urban and regional planning, environmental science, environmental management, civil engineering, management or another discipline relevant to the role.
- Extensive experience leading diverse teams and delivering strategic and operational outcomes.




- Strong knowledge of the legislative, regulatory and professional environment relevant to sustainable development services.
- Experience developing and implementing long-term strategies that deliver community benefit and sustainable service outcomes.
- The ability to work confidently with elected representatives, senior executives, government agencies, industry and community stakeholders.
- Highly developed communication, influencing, negotiation and relationship building skills.
- Strong analytical and conceptual capability, with the ability to turn complex information into clear advice and practical decisions.

Location: This position will be based at our Administration Centre in Yalawanyi Ganya at 2 Biripi Way, Taree. You may also be required to be based from other Council sites across the MidCoast Council region.

Tenure: Permanent, Full Time.
