Josef Chromy Tasmania has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Winemaker to join our team for vintage 2027.

Josef Chromy Tasmania is a renowned winery located in the picturesque Tamar Valley, just 10 minutes south of Launceston in northern Tasmania. Since its founding in 2007 by Josef Chromy OAM—a pioneer in Tasmania’s wine industry—the estate has grown to include 61 hectares of cool-climate vineyards in the Tamar Valley, with additional 17 hectares in the Coal River Valley. We specialize in producing traditional-method sparkling wines from classic varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, alongside a diverse range of premium still wines including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Working closely with our Winemaker, you will be actively involved in leading the vintage crew across all cellar operations—from fruit receival through pressing, clarification, fermentation, and post-fermentation procedures. This is a hands-on role combining active cellar work with shift supervision, leading by example to maintain a safe and positive work environment.

This role would suit Oenology graduates with solid cellar experience looking to take the next step into an Assistant Winemaker position, as well as current Assistant Winemakers or Winemakers seeking a new challenge for the upcoming Tasmanian vintage.

About the Role





- Work closely with the Winemaker and viticulture team and be involved in tasting and decision making
- Shift supervision: jump in to relieve team members for breaks, supervise, and assist team members in the cellar as required
- Data entry into Vintrace
- Setting up and participating in tasting, blending, and fining trials
- Liaising with schedulers and other winemakers in the greater business to organise juice and wine transport
- Full availability for the entire duration of vintage (approx. Feb–April/May 2027), including weekend work and potential post-vintage extension

About You

- Winemaking qualification required
- Minimum of 5 vintages as a cellar hand
- Ideally 1–2 vintages in a supervisory role
- Familiarity and confidence carrying out all basic vintage cellar operations
- Proactive individual with a strong “can do” attitude and an approachable personality
- Able to self-manage and work in a team workplace
- Ability to lead others
- Great communication skills and strong work ethic
- Great organisational skills and attention to details
- Good tasting ability
- Forklift license — an advantage
- Experience working with Vintrace — a major advantage
- Knowledge and experience working in the lab — a plus
