The opportunity

ASIO’s National Threat Assessment Centre provides strategic threat analysis and advice. As a Terrorist Tactics and Weapons analyst, you will provide tactical advice and strategic threat assessment on current and emerging security threats. You will work closely with stakeholders across Government, Defence and defence industry, law enforcement, academia and the private sector – staying ahead of the threats that matter. Our assessments are impactful, insightful, accurate and actionable.

ASIO looks for candidates who are curious, resilient and enjoy problem solving. To be successful in this role, you will ideally bring several years of experience from a defence, national security, law enforcement or academic setting in an investigative or analytical role, and be ready for your next challenge. You will have high-level research and analytical capabilities, a curious mind, and a genuine drive to contribute to ASIO’s mission. We are interested in hearing from people with:

- Demonstrated professional experience and contemporary technical knowledge of weapon systems and their associated operational tactics
- Tertiary qualifications or equivalent in chemistry, biology, physics or engineering; or equivalent professional experience in explosives, firearms or chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) issues
- Awareness and developing expertise in new and emerging technologies and their impact on the security environment.

A merit pool may be created to fill future vacancies which have the same or similar requirements to this position. This merit pool will be valid for up to 18 months.

Responsibilities

As an AE6 Terrorist Tactics and Weapons analyst in ASIO, you will:

- Leverage your technical expertise to provide tailored advice that informs ASIO and Australian Government stakeholders of enduring and emerging security threats
- Produce strategic threat assessments focused on weapons and tactics within the domestic and global security environment
- Apply advanced analytical tradecraft and research skills to generate unique insights into trends and developments affecting Australia’s security environment
- Represent ASIO and cultivate partnerships with subject matter experts across the National Intelligence Community and other strategic partners




- Develop expertise in emerging technologies and evaluate their implications on the national security setting.

What you will bring We are seeking candidates with the following capabilities:

- Strategic thinking: a demonstrated ability to identify trends and themes, and synthesize complex information into clear and impactful assessments for senior audiences

- Personal drive and integrity: the ability to work as part of a small team, display initiative and progress work under minimal supervision when required
- Communicates with influence: the ability to communicate information to a wide range of audiences and to speak authoritatively on relevant subject matter
- Technical skills: anawareness or expertise in CBRNE issues, weapons and tactics, and/or new and emerging technology impacts in a national security setting.

Skills and qualifications The following qualifications are desirable, but are not required:

- Tertiary qualifications in chemistry, biology, physics and/or engineering.

Employment conditions

Employment is under the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979. Conditions of service are similar to those applying in the Australian Public Service. We recognise entitlements accrued under the Public Service Act 1999 and provide for continuation of superannuation under the Commonwealth schemes. Salary packaging arrangements are also available.
