About the role

Music Victoria is seeking an experienced financial leader to join our Board as Treasurer.

The Treasurer provides financial governance, oversight and advice to the Board, helping ensure Music Victoria is financially sustainable, well governed and able to deliver on its purpose.

The Treasurer also chairs the Board’s Finance Subcommittee, supporting effective oversight of Music Victoria’s financial performance, financial risks, controls, budgets and audit. This is a governance and oversight role. Day-to-day financial management is the responsibility of the CEO and staff.

Key responsibilities The Treasurer will:

- Help the Board understand Music Victoria’s financial position, performance, risks and longer-term financial sustainability.
- Chair the Finance Subcommittee, ensuring it provides effective financial oversight and clear advice and recommendations to the Board. • Provide oversight of budgets, forecasts, management accounts, financial reporting and significant financial decisions.
- Support Board oversight of financial controls, cash flow, reserves, financial risk and the annual audit.
- Advise the Board on the financial implications of strategy, funding changes and significant organisational decisions.
- Work constructively with the Chair, CEO, Financial Controller and other relevant staff. • Support clear and accessible financial reporting to the Board, including helping Directors understand significant financial issues, risks and decisions.
- Contribute as a Director to Music Victoria’s broader strategy, governance, risk oversight and purpose.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone with:
- Senior financial, commercial, accounting or financial governance experience.
- Strong financial literacy and the ability to interpret budgets, financial statements,



forecasts and organisational financial risks.
- The ability to communicate financial information clearly to a non-financial audience.
- An understanding of Board governance, risk and organisational sustainability.
- The ability to chair the Finance Subcommittee effectively and facilitate constructive discussion and decision-making.
- A collaborative approach and the confidence to provide constructive challenge and independent judgement.
- An understanding of the distinction between Board oversight and operational management.

Experience in not-for-profit, membership, arts or cultural organisations, government funding or grants would be valuable but is not essential.

A CA or CPA qualification is highly regarded but not essential where equivalent senior financial and governance experience can be demonstrated.

Appointment and commitment

Directors are appointed for a three-year term and may serve up to a maximum of three consecutive terms. The Treasurer position is elected annually by the Board.

The Treasurer is expected to:

- Attend Board meetings, Finance Subcommittee meetings, the AGM and key Board planning sessions.
- Chair Finance Subcommittee meetings and work with the CEO and Finance Manager to ensure appropriate financial matters are brought to the Subcommittee and Board.
- Review relevant financial papers in advance of meetings.
- Have reasonable availability between meetings when significant financial or governance matters arise.

As with all Directors, the Treasurer is expected to act in the best interests of Music Victoria, contribute constructively to Board decision-making and uphold the organisation’s governance responsibilities.
