Primary objective

Provide statutory and non-statutory welfare services to individuals, groups and communities under Department of Children and Families.

Context Statement The Department of Children and Families provides a range of services focused on protecting children in the Northern Territory (NT) from harm. Providing statutory and non- statutory services in remote Aboriginal communities including family support services for vulnerable children and their families. This position entails living and working in a remote community.

Key duties and responsibilities

- Responsible for the delivery of case work and case management services to clients, including the management of more complex cases requiring liaison with other Agency and non-Government Organisations.
- Maintain a high level of services to clients through the provision of professional expertise and demonstrated best practice in the delivery of statutory welfare services.
- Undertake statutory responsibilities and exercise delegations under the Care and Protection of Children Act in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Provide support, training and education to staff on program and practice issues to enhance their skills, knowledge and understanding of programs.
- Ensure the availability of reliable data through the accurate and timely recording of information on the Department of Children and Families client information and case management systems.
- Participate in the After-Hours Service.
- Participate in Emergency Management responses as part of the Welfare Functional Group.

Selection criteria

Essential

- A degree of an Australian tertiary institution, which gives eligibility for membership of the Australian Community Workers Association, the Australian

Association of Social Workers, or the Australian Psychological Society, or equivalent or Diploma of Child, Youth and Family Intervention and Vocational

Graduate Certificate in Community Service Practice (Statutory Child Protection) or Graduate Certificate in Safe Communities (Child Protection).

- Extensive experience commensurate with the duties of the position, including highly developed professional skills in conducting strength-based assessments, developing and delivering effective interventions, and a demonstrated capacity to apply best practice principles.
- Significant experience working within a legislative framework and a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team setting.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills,



including developing and delivering formal and informal training for staff and the preparation of court reports.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, family and community structures.
- High level organisational skills including the ability to work independently manage time effectively and contribute to the professional development and learning needs of colleagues.
- Demonstrated skills in the use of computers and an ability and willingness to undertake training in the program’s computer-based data entry system.
- Preparedness to travel in 4WD vehicles and light planes as required and ability to undertake travel including overnight stays as necessary.
- Current C class driver’s licence.

Desirable

- In the order of five years relevant experience and that this will include at least six months experience of child protection work and at least six months experience of working with children in care.

Further information

Successful P1 applicants will be appointed to the 4th increment. In addition, a Child Protection Market allowance of $7,638 per annum applies to this position, as per Determination 1019 of 2022. The recommended applicant will be required to hold a current Working with Children Clearance notice and undergo a criminal history check (a criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history).

Further information The remuneration package for a Child Protection Practitioner at the Professional 2 level is $95,697 - $114,104 (including salary $113,101 -

$134,507). In addition, a Child protection Market Allowance of $8,820 per annum applies to this position as per Determination 1019 of 2022.
