Job Description

Reporting to the Head of News, you will drive afternoon and evening coverage for The Sydney Morning Herald, leading breaking news delivery across digital and print platforms. In this pivotal senior editorial role, you will oversee late-breaking stories, manage evening news operations and curate high-impact content that engages and grows key audiences.

Day to day you will:

- Commission, assign and edit late-breaking stories to ensure competitive, timely coverage.
- Direct evening reporters and lead PM news conferences as required.
- Maintain exceptional editorial standards through rigorous fact-checking, legal checks and digital polish.
- Update live stories continuously to reflect real-time developments across editions.
- Manage dynamic homepage editions to align with core editorial priorities.
- Participate in print conferences and sign off on page 1 content.
- Ensure seamless coverage integration across online and print channels.

What you'll bring:

- Prior experience as a news or topic editor, with a track record of managing reporters.
- Outstanding editorial judgment paired with sharp copy-editing and storytelling skills.
- Strong platform literacy across digital formats, print publishing, and analytics tools.
- Collaborative mindset with a proven ability to partner across wider media teams.




- Superior organisational and time-management skills tailored to fast-paced newsroom deadlines.
- Keen interest in using audience insights to drive reach and engagement.
