About the role:

As a Clinical Assistant, you will contribute to the provision of high quality, cost-effective pathology services to clients of the QEII Hospital and Pathology Queensland by applying skills and knowledge to assist delivery of pathology services relating to Phlebotomy and Specimen Reception.

Key responsibilities include:

Perform phlebotomy collections on wards and in the Outpatient department as required. Ensure correct patient identification, labelling and collecting techniques are followed according to documented Pathology Queensland policies and procedures.

Liaise with patients, hospital staff and laboratory staff to ensure correct collection of appropriate blood and non-blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients occurs for the tests requested.

Collection of appropriate quality blood and non-blood specimens from clients of Pathology Queensland, utilising a variety of collection techniques as necessary.

Accurately and consistently, perform all routine laboratory duties including receipt of specimens, data entry, esky packing, inventory control and other duties as requested. Ability to effectively prioritise workloads to assist the laboratory to effectively meet Pathology Queensland Turn-around-Times (TAT) targets.

Develop a sound knowledge of the Laboratory Information System (AUSLAB) and the integrated electronic Medical Record system (ieMR) applicable to the position.

General routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment and workstations as indicated by maintenance protocols and infection control policies.

Maintain competencies in all aspects of Phlebotomy and CSR and maintain a low error rate. To work independently and professionally and demonstrate sound problem-solving skills.

Participate in all rostered shifts including day shifts, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

Participate in quality and service improvement activities to continually improve patient care and assist in staff training.





Perform additional duties as directed by the Clinical Assistant Supervisor, Laboratory Manager or their delegates.

Comply with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification requirements including performing quality control procedures, assisting with preparation of procedure manuals and completion of relevant statistics.
