Help shape safe, person-centred care at Board level. HomeCare Australia is seeking an experienced clinician to join our Board as an Independent Non-Executive Director and strengthen our clinical governance, quality and safety oversight.

The opportunity

This is a governance role, not an operational clinical position. The successful applicant will bring an independent clinical lens to Board decision-making and help the Board oversee the systems that support safe, high-quality clinical care. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission emphasises that governing bodies must monitor clinical governance, clinical performance and outcomes, incidents, complaints, risks and continuous improvement.

What we are looking for

· A registered health professional with substantial clinical experience relevant to care delivered in the home and community. Registered Nurse experience in aged care, community nursing or complex care would be highly regarded.

· Clinical qualifications and experience that can support informed Board decision-making. The Commission describes a clinical-care governing body member as someone who is currently practising/delivering clinical care, or who has relevant and current clinical experience.

· A robust understanding of clinical governance, quality and safety, person-centred care, risk management and continuous improvement.

· Ability to interpret clinical quality data, identify emerging risks, ask constructive questions and hold management appropriately accountable.

· Knowledge of aged care, including the Aged Care Act 2024, Aged Care Rules 2025 and strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, or a willingness to develop this knowledge quickly.

· Experience with areas such as dementia, falls, medication safety, wound care,



continence, palliative/end-of-life care, infection prevention, restrictive practices, deterioration and escalation would be valuable.

· Strong professional judgement, integrity, objectivity and the confidence to contribute an independent clinical perspective.

· Previous Board or governance experience is desirable but not essential where the applicant can demonstrate senior clinical leadership and an understanding of governance responsibilities.

What you will contribute at Board level

· Provide clinical insight to strategic and governance decisions while remaining appropriately separate from day-to-day management.

· Review clinical reports for the Board each month that are written by our RN clinician and present the findings to the Board each quarter.

· Support the Board to set priorities and strategic direction for safe and quality clinical care and oversee the organisation’s clinical governance framework.

· Review reporting on clinical performance, incidents, complaints, feedback, risks, audits and improvement activities.

· Ask whether systems, workforce capability, policies and resources are sufficient to deliver safe, coordinated and evidence-based care.

· Promote a culture where the rights, goals, preferences and lived experience of older people inform decision-making.

· Contribute to Board discussions about workforce competence, scope of practice, escalation pathways and the coordination of care with external health professionals.

· Participate in relevant governance and clinical-governance education and maintain contemporary knowledge appropriate to the role.

Independence and suitability

Our preference is for the clinical Board member to meet the Commission’s principles for an independent non-executive member:



someone who does not hold an operational position within HomeCare Australia, can act objectively, is free from relationships that could improperly influence decision-making, and can act in the best interests of older people. Board members are responsible persons under aged care regulation and appointment will therefore be subject to appropriate suitability and background checks, conflict-of-interest assessment, referee checks and other governance due diligence.

Commitment The Board meets quarterly, with additional participation as reasonably required for governance, clinical-quality or strategic matters. Meetings may be attended online, enabling applications from suitably qualified clinicians across Australia. Remuneration and appointment terms will be discussed with shortlisted applicants.
