Position Description
Casual Support Worker — Supported Independent Living (Complex Support)
Employer: Tibii QLD
Location: Redlands / Bayside, Queensland
Employment type: Casual
Reports to: Regional Manager; day-to-day reporting to Team Leader, where applicable
Pay and conditions: Casual hourly rate, including applicable casual loading, weekend and public-holiday penalties, active overnight and/or sleepover arrangements, vehicle reimbursement and other applicable allowances in accordance with the applicable industrial instrument.
About the role
Tibii QLD is seeking reliable Casual Support Workers to join a small, dedicated team providing Supported Independent Living support to adults with complex and high support needs.
This is a hands-on role supporting people at home and in the community. It includes personal care, meal and fluid support, communication assistance, daily living skills, community access, behaviour support and accurate documentation.
The people supported benefit from calm, capable and respectful workers who can provide predictable support, follow participant-specific plans consistently and build trusted relationships over time. Consistency of staffing is important to communication, relationship-building, safety and wellbeing.
This is a casual position. Shifts are offered based on participant needs, roster requirements, worker availability and demonstrated suitability for the service. There are no guaranteed minimum hours; however, regular shifts may be available for workers who demonstrate reliability, consistency, availability and a strong fit with participant needs and the team.
The service is in a period of planned transition. Successful applicants must be adaptable and committed to supporting continuity through planned changes to accommodation, staffing and roster arrangements.
The support environment
You will support adults who may have limited verbal or non-verbal communication and who use communication methods such as visual supports, key word signs, gestures, facial expressions and consistent routines.
The role may involve supporting people who:
Require assistance and supervision with personal care, daily routines and household activities.
Need structured and closely supervised meals and fluids in line with current mealtime-management plans.
Benefit from low-arousal communication, preparation for changes and extra processing time.
Experience anxiety, distress or behaviours of concern, particularly during changes in routine or in busy or unfamiliar environments.
Require proactive positive behaviour support, close supervision and consistent implementation of current support plans.
Need support to access the community safely, including public transport, appointments, activities and recreation.
May require one-to-one support, two-to-one community support or an awake active overnight support model, depending on the participant plan and roster.
You will receive participant-specific induction before undertaking duties independently. This includes communication strategies, Positive Behaviour Support Plans, mealtime-management requirements, manual-handling procedures, safety plans, medication procedures where applicable and other required training.
Key responsibilities
Daily living and personal care
Provide respectful support with personal care, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, household tasks and daily routines.
Promote participant choice, control,
dignity and independence at every appropriate step.
Support participants to take part in shopping, meal preparation, household activities and everyday decision-making using their preferred communication methods.
Prepare, present and supervise food and fluids strictly in accordance with each participant’s current mealtime-management plan, texture-modified diet instructions, swallowing-safety requirements and food-safety procedures.
Promptly report choking, coughing, changes in swallowing, food-seeking concerns, reduced intake, dehydration concerns or other health and safety risks.
Maintain a safe, clean and secure home environment, including following participant-specific requirements for food, medication, chemicals, personal-care items and other restricted items.
Follow all participant-specific health, mobility, manual-handling and medication-support procedures.
Behaviour support and safety
Implement each participant’s current Positive Behaviour Support Plan using proactive, least-restrictive, person-centred and trauma-informed approaches.
Use low-arousal, predictable communication by explaining what is happening next, using visual or communication supports where required, allowing adequate processing time and avoiding unnecessary repetition or escalation.
Support participants to regulate distress through approved proactive strategies, environmental adjustments, communication supports and de-escalation techniques.
Only implement a regulated restrictive practice where it is documented in a current participant plan, authorised in accordance with applicable Queensland requirements, and within your verified training, competency and role authority.
Never introduce, vary or use a restrictive practice outside of current authorisation, training, participant plans and Tibii procedures.
Identify, respond to, document and escalate incidents, injuries, behaviours of concern, near misses, unauthorised restrictive-practice concerns and other safety risks in accordance with Tibii’s incident-management procedures.
Participate in debriefing, supervision, plan review and continuous-improvement processes following incidents or significant events.
Support participants safely in the community, including road safety, public transport, water safety, appointments, recreation and community activities, while following required staffing ratios and risk-management plans.
Communication and relationships
Learn and consistently use each participant’s preferred communication methods, including visual supports, key word signs, gestures, cue cards, communication devices and other strategies.
Follow recommendations and strategies from speech pathologists, occupational therapists, behaviour support practitioners and other allied-health professionals.
Build safe, respectful and trusting relationships with participants while maintaining appropriate skilled boundaries.
Communicate respectfully and professionally with families, guardians, nominees, allied-health professionals,
co-workers and other relevant stakeholders.
Complete clear and accurate handovers at every shift change, including relevant information about health, meals and fluids, sleep, mood, behaviour, activities, incidents, appointments and follow-up actions.
Essential criteria
Current NDIS Worker Screening Check/clearance, or the ability to obtain one before commencement where permitted by law and Tibii policy.
Completion of the NDIS Worker Orientation Module, or willingness to complete it before commencement or within the timeframe directed by Tibii.
Current First Aid and CPR certificate, or willingness to obtain these before commencement.
Current Queensland driver licence and access to a reliable vehicle, where required for the roster and participant-support needs.
Right to work in Australia.
Demonstrated experience supporting people with disability, complex support needs, autism, intellectual disability, mental-health-related support needs and/or behaviours of concern; or transferable experience with a demonstrated capacity to undertake intensive participant-specific training.
Demonstrated ability to remain calm, respectful, patient and consistent during challenging or unpredictable situations.
Ability to follow participant-specific support plans, behaviour support plans, mealtime-management plans, safety plans and workplace procedures consistently.
Willingness to complete participant-specific training in PBSP implementation, mealtime management, dysphagia and modified-texture requirements, manual handling, medication support where required and other mandatory areas.
Ability to write clear, factual and timely shift notes, incident reports and handover information using electronic documentation systems.
Desirable criteria
Certificate III or IV in Individual Support, Disability, Community Services or a related field.
Current study toward a relevant qualification.
Experience in Supported Independent Living, group-home, high-intensity-support or complex-support environments.
Experience supporting people who use non-verbal communication, key word sign, Auslan, Makaton, AAC devices, visual schedules or communication cards.
Experience implementing Positive Behaviour Support Plans and using proactive, low-arousal and de-escalation approaches.
Experience supporting people with dysphagia, modified diets, texture-modified food, thickened fluids or mealtime-management plans.
Experience working with two-to-one community-support arrangements or higher-support-ratio environments.
