Australian Men's Shed Association – Newcastle NSW

4 days per week | Hybrid | Newcastle-based

Where good people build communities, shoulder to shoulder.

At the Australian Men’s Shed Association, some of our best work starts with a conversation. It might be over a cuppa at the shed, watching a group of shedders working on a community project or it could be hearing someone quietly say, "I don't know where I'd be without this place."

Those are the moments that help people understand why Men's Sheds matter.

AMSA is the national body supporting more than 1,300 Men's & Community Sheds across Australia, and we're growing our Communications & Impact team. We're looking for someone who's just as comfortable chatting with shedders over a coffee as they are pitching a story to media outlets.

The role

The PR & Communications Specialist is responsible for driving AMSA’s external visibility through proactive media, storytelling and communications initiatives.

Working under the strategic direction of the Communications & Impact Manager, the role focuses on identifying opportunities, developing compelling content and delivering communications activities that elevate AMSA’s profile, partnerships and impact.

This position requires a high degree of initiative, robust editorial judgement and the ability to independently drive communications activities from concept through to delivery.

The details

4 days per week (30 hours)

Hybrid working arrangement

Newcastle-based, may require some domestic travel on occasion

$78,500 + super + NFP salary packaging available

What you'll be doing

- Proactively identify and pursue media opportunities to promote AMSA’s work, impact and advocacy priorities.
- Interviewing, writing and editing feature articles, case studies, long-form storytelling and thought leadership content.
- Contributing to the development and delivery of AMSA's podcast.
- Contributing across all of AMSA's communications channels including social media, EDMs, websites, and printed materials.

- Coordinating media opportunities, drafting speeches, talking points and briefing materials.
- Supporting partnership activations through communications and promotion.
- Working closely with internal teams to identify stories and content opportunities.

What we're looking for

You'll be a great fit if you:

- Create content that feels genuine and true to the people behind it.
- Have proven experience in PR, journalism, media or communications, including developing and pitching stories to media.
- Have strong editorial judgement in identifying what makes a story compelling and relevant.
- Can demonstrate exceptional writing, editing and storytelling skills.
- Are organised, practical and happy to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in.
- Enjoy working in a small team where everyone contributes and supports one another.

Your impact

Your work shapes how Australia understands the Men’s Shed movement. Through proactive media engagement, powerful storytelling and creative content, you elevate AMSA’s voice, strengthen its reputation and ensure the stories of sheds and their communities are seen, heard and valued.

You help position AMSA as a trusted national leader in men’s health and community wellbeing.

Why AMSA?

- Flexibility that works for life | We trust people to manage their time, focus on outcomes and get the job done.
- A team that shows up | We're a small team with plenty of banter. We back each other, pitch in when needed and celebrate the wins together.
- Purpose you can feel | This isn't abstract impact. You'll see it in sheds, in conversations and in communities across the country.
- A role you can grow in | You’ll be given real responsibility from day one to help shape how we tell the stories of the Men's Shed movement, and a chance to broaden your experience across a wide range of communications projects.

Hold a current Working with Children Check (WWCC), or be willing to obtain one.

The Australian Men's Shed Association values diversity and encourages applications from people of all genders, backgrounds and lived experiences.
