The Role

Whale watching, beach days, a trip to K'gari or a walk through the Great Sandy Strait hinterland. Life in Hervey Bay comes with a backdrop most people only get on holidays.

It's also a region with no shortage of stories, from breaking news to features that surprise seasoned journalists. The ABC is looking for a Reporter to join our Wide Bay team, based in Hervey Bay and working under the direction of the Editor, ABC Wide Bay.

You'll cover daily news and breaking stories alongside longer-form features, filing across radio, TV and digital, and build the community relationships that help you find and shape original content.

The Job

- Create content for multiple platforms to engage local and national audiences.
- Produce and present news bulletins, Q&As;, interviews and packages across all platforms, including breaking stories.
- Contribute to planning and commissioning processes to develop and distribute new content ideas that achieve strong reach and engagement.
- Contribute to the implementation of the Local Emergency Coverage plan and liaise with relevant stakeholders as required.
- Work with colleagues to identify and develop local and regional content that can be shared with other content teams across the ABC.
- Generate stories that reflect the cultural, geographic and socio-economic diversity of the Australian community.
- Actively engage with communities to find and tell stories that matter to them.

About You

You bring robust editorial instincts and a track record of finding and telling stories that set the agenda.





You will have the skills to work independently and be a self-starter with a genuine curiosity for regional stories and a strong understanding of issues important to local audiences.

You'll have:

- Accomplished editorial skills, including the ability to source and analyse information and exercise sound judgement.
- A creative approach to content construction and delivery, with experience in live presentation and broadcast.
- A current and valid Driver’s Licence
- A sound understanding of the issues that affect and interest the local audience, and a genuine passion for telling stories that reflect Australia's diversity.
