- In-house PSS/E and PSCAD modelling across the full R0, R1 and R2 lifecycle
- Growing solar, wind and BESS pipeline across Australia
- Work directly with AEMO, NSPs and global OEMs, including on grid-forming BESS
The Company
Our client is a well-established renewable energy developer and independent power producer with a substantial pipeline of solar, wind and battery energy storage projects across Australia. They develop, build, own and operate their assets, so their engineers are involved across the full project lifecycle rather than handing projects off at financial close.
The Opportunity
The Grid Connection Engineer supports the team across every stage of the connection process, from early site prospecting and R0 studies through to GPS negotiation, hold point testing, R2 model validation and support for operating assets.
This is a hands-on technical role. You'll run PSS/E and PSCAD studies, work through due diligence and FIA processes, and sit in the room for technical negotiations with network service providers and AEMO. Because the business owns what it builds, you'll see your work through from a greenfield site assessment to an energised, registered generating system and beyond.
You'll also help shape the team's internal capability. That includes contributing to new modelling tools, assessing OEM inverter and PPC models, and working on grid-forming BESS and other emerging technologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Support site prospecting for new BESS, solar and wind projects through PSS/E simulations and review of NSP Annual Planning Reports and AEMO's Integrated System Plan, and recommend where the business should focus development
- Prepare PSS/E NEM snapshots across operational scenarios, including RUG packs, for use in R0 and R1 studies
- Carry out in-house power system modelling and studies during R0 (through to NER 5.3.4A/B approval and Offer to Connect) and R1 (through to AEMO registration)
- Undertake PSS/E and PSCAD modelling investigations with OEM support to resolve technical matters in the DD and FIA processes
- Support GPS negotiations with NSPs and AEMO, drawing on detailed power systems analysis and NER Schedule 5.2 knowledge
- Develop GPS Compliance Assessment and R2 Model Validation Test Plans with input from EPC contractors, OEMs, NSPs and AEMO
- Support hold point testing campaigns by providing RUG parameters, running pre-test simulations and risk assessments, and preparing Hold Point and R2 Model Validation reports
- Carry out internal due diligence on OEM inverter and PPC models to inform equipment selection
- Review transmission connection scope, cost estimates and key technical terms, and support the technical review of PPA terms
- Support upgrades and modifications to generating systems in commercial operation
- Monitor NER changes and state-based connection requirements, and contribute to regulatory submissions on rule changes and REZ access standards
- Support internal education on asynchronous generator technology,
including grid-following versus grid-forming design considerations
About You
- Degree qualified in Electrical or Power Engineering or a closely related discipline
- Around 2 to 5 years' experience in grid connection or power system studies, whether with a developer, consultancy, OEM, EPC contractor or network service provider
- Sound understanding of NER Chapter 5, Schedule 5.2 and the Australian grid connection process from application through to registration
- Strong power systems analysis skills for asynchronous generating systems (inverter-based resources, BESS, wind and solar)
- Hands-on modelling experience in PSS/E and PowerFactory, with PSCAD exposure well regarded
- Practical experience with hold point testing and R2 model validation
- Confidence working through complex engineering problems and a lateral approach to finding solutions
- Clear written and verbal communication, and the technical diplomacy to hold your ground in discussions with NSPs, AEMO and OEMs
- Organised and able to manage several projects and deadlines at once
- Brisbane-based, or willing to relocate, with full Australian working rights
Exposure to grid-forming inverter technology, GPS negotiation, or modelling automation (Python scripting for PSS/E, for example) will be highly regarded.
