The Fraud Control Officer is responsible for proactive training and awareness to all staff within VAQ about identifying suspected fraud on the financial assistance scheme, actioning suspected and/or actual fraud identified by VAQ, collaborating with other government agencies to stay informed about the latest trends and best practices in fraud detection and prevention.

The role is also responsible for working closely with the VAQ Financial Assistance Unit to review current VAQ fraud protocols, processes, and fraud detection methods and implement measures to help identify and prevent any potential fraud issues and risks, and as part of continuous improvement, monitor and evaluate VAQ processes to identify potential areas of risk to the organisation.

Key responsibilities

- Demonstrate cultural capability and/or a commitment to developing cultural capability to ensure an inclusive culture that aligns with the Human Rights Act 2019 and supports departmental programs and community partnerships aimed at preserving cultural connections for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Enhance and maintain accurate fraud control registers and undertake records management activities and fraud control audits.
- Action suspected and/or actual fraud on the financial assistance scheme and determine the course of action for any identified suspected or actual fraud in line with VAQ policies and operational practice guidelines.




- Continuously monitor and evaluate VAQ processes to identify potential areas of fraud risk and implement measures to address vulnerabilities.
- Conduct high-level reviews of VAQ's fraud protocols, processes, and detection methods, recommending and implementing improvements to mitigate potential fraud risks.
- Maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders, including other departmental business units and government agencies, to stay informed about emerging trends, best practices, and legislative changes in fraud detection and prevention.
- Analyse data to identify fraud patterns, trends, and anomalies, using insights to inform fraud prevention strategies and improve detection methods.
- Provide operational advice to senior management, including analysis of emerging fraud trends, service demands, and legislative issues, ensuring VAQ remains responsive and adaptable.
- Develop and implement governance frameworks, policies, and record keeping practices to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and support effective fraud prevention initiatives, including Departmental reporting.
- Working with the VAQ Training Officer, develop and deliver proactive training and awareness programs for all staff within VAQ to enhance their ability to identify and respond to suspected fraud.
- Prepare comprehensive and well-researched documentation, including frameworks, reports, and presentations, to support fraud control initiatives and inform decision-making.
- Coordinate and facilitate meetings with senior management, team leaders, and other stakeholders to progress fraud prevention initiatives and ensure alignment on expectations and deliverables.
