Scrap Metal Recycling Supervisor & Truck Driver
The Scrap Yard Supervisor oversees day-to-day metal recycling, sorting and bin operations at the West Ipswich yard. The role leads a team of yard hands, plant operators and drivers, holds the yard to strict Queensland Work Health and Safety standards, and operates heavy machinery and heavy vehicles to process, stockpile and transport ferrous and non-ferrous scrap efficiently. The Supervisor is accountable for a safe, clean, productive yard and for the accurate grading and handling of all incoming and outgoing material.
Key responsibilities
Supervise, train and roster daily yard staff to meet productivity goals and safety requirements.
Allocate daily tasks, set expectations and hold the team accountable for output and standards.
Conduct toolbox talks, inductions and on-the-job training for current and existing yard staff.
Manage day-to-day performance, attendance and behaviour issues, escalating to management where required.
Enforce compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act (Qld) and all Group WHS policies and procedures.
Complete and verify daily pre-start checks on all plant, equipment and vehicles.
Lead hazard identification,



risk assessment and incident reporting; ensure corrective actions are closed out.
Oversee the receipt, grading, sorting and segregation of incoming scrap — ferrous and non-ferrous.
Safely operate excavators fitted with grabs and shears to sort, stockpile and load scrap metal.
Drive heavy vehicles to deliver, collect and relocate commercial bins, equipment and scrap material.
About you
Valid QLD HC Licence (Heavy Combination truck licence) — Essential
Excavator ticket with nationally recognised competency or statement of attainment — Essential
Valid QLD High Risk Work Licence (LF class) forklift licence — Essential
Minimum 3+ years in a scrap metal, waste management or heavy industrial recycling workplace
Proven leadership or supervisory experience managing small-to-medium teams
Sound knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous grades and of scrap handling and processing methods
Solid mechanical aptitude and a genuine commitment to safety protocols
Practical literacy and numeracy for pre-starts, records, volumes and reporting
